Mapping the environmental impacts and policy effectiveness of takeaway food industry in China

Yuting Zhang et al.

Summary: The takeaway food industry in China, which has over 400 million consumers, has resulted in significant packaging waste and environmental burden. Research shows that besides plastic waste, the industry also causes various environmental impacts including resource consumption, greenhouse gases emission, water pollution, and health risks. However, without targeted and regionally differentiated plastic pollution control policies, the control of the environmental impact of the takeaway food industry remains ineffective.

Decision-making dynamic evolution among groups regarding express packaging waste recycling under different reference dependence and information policy

Jiahui Yang et al.

Summary: The reveal of the evolutionary trend in express packaging waste recycling behavior is crucial for waste management. Current models based on expected utility theory fail to consider the susceptibility of groups to internal and external factors. To address this issue, this study constructs an evolutionary game model that incorporates information policy and reference dependence factors to explore the decision-making of groups with varying initial adoption rates. Simulation experiments based on survey data demonstrate the impacts of key factors on the evolution path of recycling behavior.

Potential for future reductions of global GHG and air pollutants from circular waste management systems

Adriana Gomez-Sanabria et al.

Summary: Based on the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways, a global systematic approach is developed to evaluate the potential reduction of greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions through circular municipal waste management systems. The study contrasts two sets of global scenarios and finds that a sustainability-oriented mitigation strategy produces earlier and larger co-benefits compared to scenarios focused solely on technical solutions. The findings indicate that the sustainability-oriented scenario can eliminate ambient air pollution from open burning entirely before 2050, while still having 386 Tg CO2eq/yr of GHG (CH4 and CO2) to be released.

Five dimensions of climate governance: a framework for empirical research based on polycentric and multi-level governance perspectives

Deborah Heinen et al.

Summary: The governance of climate mitigation and adaptation has been discussed from both polycentric and multi-level governance perspectives. These perspectives are closely related but have distinct differences in some aspects, as one has evolved from empirical research within the United States and the other within the European Union. It is necessary to bring these two discourses together within the increasingly global discourse on climate governance.

Identifying the driving factors of rural residents' household waste classification behavior: Evidence from Sichuan, China

Yibin Ao et al.

Summary: The active participation of rural residents in household waste classification is crucial for sustainable development. This study found that factors such as publicity and education, attitudes, subjective norms, past behavior, and sense of belonging significantly influence the intention and behavior of rural residents' household waste classification. Strengthening publicity and education on waste classification and enhancing residents' sense of belonging are important strategies to promote household waste classification in China's rural areas.
