Invited review: Muscle protein breakdown and its assessment in periparturient dairy cows

H. Sadri et al.

Summary: Mobilization of body reserves is necessary for high-yielding dairy cows during the periparturient period. However, the role of skeletal muscle in this process has not been extensively studied. Understanding the regulation and assessment of muscle protein breakdown is important for determining the timing and extent of tissue mobilization in dairy cows.

Characterisation of productive performance, body reserve dynamics and energy metabolic parameters of Holstein Friesian and Normande dairy cows managed in a low-input pastoral dairy system

Ezequiel Jorge-Smeding et al.

Summary: This study assessed the associations between Holstein Friesian (HF) and Normande (NR) cows in a low-input pastoral dairy system, finding that HF cows had higher milk yield but lower body weight and body condition score, higher NEFA concentrations, and NR cows utilized body reserves more effectively during lactation.

Exploration of robustness indicators using adaptive responses to short-term feed restriction in suckling primiparous beef cows

A. De La Torre et al.

Summary: Animal robustness, an important complex trait in livestock production systems and genetic selection, can be evaluated through phenotyping. This study used an experimental framework to induce marked deviations in the adaptive responses of suckling beef cows and identified relevant indicators of responses. The study found that milk yield and non-esterified fatty acid concentrations showed significant changes in response to feed restriction. Functional data analysis was applied to model the adaptive responses and extract quantifiable indicators of deviation and recovery. The results showed that short-term feed restriction is a relevant framework for studying productive and metabolic adaptive responses in suckling cows and allows the identification of potential robustness indicators.

Modelling beef cows' individual response to short nutrient restriction in different lactation stages

K. G. Orquera-Arguero et al.

Summary: This study aimed to model the response of beef cows during lactation to short-term nutritional challenges and identify differences between cows with different response profiles. The results suggest that the cows' milk potential drove their response to the challenges, and cows with higher milk yield were able to activate metabolic pathways to cope with and recover from the challenges.

Effect of feed restriction on dairy cow milk production: a review

Antoine Leduc et al.

Summary: Negative energy balance affects milk yield, composition, and animal health in dairy cows. Studying the effects of feed restriction (FR) experiments is essential to understand the physiological changes induced by negative energy balance. These protocols can impact animal metabolism, hormonal regulations, mammary gland activity, and ultimately milk production and composition.
