Environmental life cycle assessment (E-LCA) and social impact assessment (SIA) of small-scale biorefineries implemented in rural zones: the avocado (Persea Americana var. Americana) case in Colombia

Juan Camilo Solarte-Toro et al.

Summary: The objective of this study is to compare the environmental and social performance of two small-scale avocado biorefineries in rural Colombia. The environmental analysis was done using life cycle assessment methodology, and the water footprint of avocado crops was estimated. The social assessment considered indicators related to wages, jobs, and working hours. It was found that new strategies should be implemented to reduce farmers' dependency on fertilizers and fungicides, and the installation of a small-scale biorefinery could create more jobs.

Evaluating the environmental impacts of analytical chemistry methods: From a critical review towards a proposal using a life cycle approach

Bastien Raccary et al.

Summary: Over the past twenty years, analytical chemistry scientists have developed tools to evaluate the environmental impact of their methods. This study reviews these tools using criteria inspired by the life cycle assessment framework. The results demonstrate that the reviewed tools are user-friendly but have limitations in scope and rely on subjective weighting schemes. The study discusses the strengths and weaknesses of life cycle assessment as a complementary approach and illustrates its ability to provide quantitative and comprehensive information on the environmental performance of analytical chemistry methods. However, implementing life cycle assessment is time-consuming, requires expertise, and is not suitable for routine application. The study concludes by identifying key challenges for the application of life cycle assessment in the field of analytical chemistry.

Biorefineries as the base for accomplishing the sustainable development goals (SDGs) and the transition to bioeconomy: Technical aspects, challenges and perspectives

Juan Camilo Solarte-Toro et al.

Summary: SDGs serve as guidelines to improve the global socio-economic and environmental situation, while biorefineries are seen as a key pathway towards achieving these goals. By upgrading biomass into value-added products and energy vectors, biorefineries can address issues such as waste generation and climate change, while also promoting the implementation of a bioeconomy.
