Experimental investigation of CaCO3/CaO in a spiral coil reactor for thermochemical energy storage

Xiaoyi Chen et al.

Summary: In the field of thermochemical energy storage, the reactor design faces challenges due to low thermal conductivity or permeability of solid reactants. A novel spiral coil reactor based on pneumatic transmission and secondary flow is proposed in this paper for thermochemical energy storage, where CaCO3 conversion is low mainly due to particle agglomeration and sintering at high temperatures which result in unstable gas velocity and pressure drop fluctuations.

Relevant influence of alkali carbonate doping on the thermochemical energy storage of Ca-based natural minerals during CaO/CaCO3 cycles

Rui Han et al.

Summary: The study investigated the use of alkali carbonates as dopants to improve the decarbonation rates and cycling stability of limestone/dolomite for thermochemical energy storage. While alkali carbonate doping reduced the decarbonation temperature, it also enhanced sintering of limestone-based CaO. However, Li2CO3 doped dolomite maintained excellent cyclic stability due to the inhibition effect of the MgO skeleton on sintering.

T. X. Xu et al.

Summary: Doping TiO2 improves the anti-sintering ability and cyclic stability of CaCO3, with an optimal doping ratio of 2.5 mol%, and energy storage density of 1256.68 kJ/kg(sample) at initial and increased by 2.26 times after 30 cycles. Additionally, TiO2 doping reduces the activation energy and initial decarbonation temperature in CO2 atmospheres.

Kinetics and cyclability of limestone (CaCO3) in presence of steam during calcination in the CaL scheme for thermochemical energy storage

Juan Arcenegui-Troya et al.

Summary: The study found that adding steam in the CaCO3 calcination step can increase reaction rate, decrease activation energy, save energy, and alleviate deactivation of the sorbent. Additionally, calcining in steam results in higher residual conversion compared to calcination without steam.
