Corrosion of pipeline steel in dense phase CO2 containing impurities: A critical review of test methodologies

S. K. Kairy et al.

Summary: Characterising the corrosion behaviour of pipeline steels in impurity-containing dense phase CO2 is crucial for cost-effective carbon capture and storage projects. Experimental studies have been conducted to predict and control corrosion using various testing methods. However, the reliability and reproducibility of published literature on corrosion rates are lacking due to challenges in controlling test parameters, highlighting the urgent need for a standard test method.

Advancing the mechanistic understanding of corrosion in supercritical CO2 with H2O and O2 impurities

Kaiyang Li et al.

Summary: The effects of impurities H2O and O-2 in transported s-CO2 on the corrosion modes and kinetics of pipeline steels were investigated. Pressure is a key factor affecting the solubility of H2O in s-CO2 and corrosion extent, and a threshold pressure above which corrosion rate remarkably increases with pressure was identified. In-situ electrochemical noise (EN) technique revealed that corrosion in s-CO2 with H2O and O-2 is dominated by gas chemical reactions rather than electrochemical reactions.

Experimental study on EOR performance of CO2-based flooding methods on tight oil

Haiyang Yu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of CO2-based methods on tight oil EOR performance through coreflood experiments, and explores the feasibility of CWI/ACWI/ACWAG in increasing the recovery of tight oil with high wax content. Experimental results show that ACWAG achieved the highest oil recovery among all methods.

A numerical model based on finite element method for predicting the corrosion of carbon steel under supercritical CO2 conditions

Y. Y. Li et al.

Summary: A numerical model was developed to predict the corrosion evolution of N80 carbon steel in supercritical CO2 containing oilfield produced water, incorporating factors such as mass transfer, electrochemical corrosion, chemical reactions, and the evolution of FeCO3 film. Through finite element calculation, the model showed good agreement with experimental data, providing insight into the complex interaction between steel corrosion and the evolution of protective FeCO3 film under supercritical CO2 conditions.

Influence of H2S on the general corrosion and sulfide stress cracking of pipelines steels for supercritical CO2 transportation

Kaiyang Li et al.

Summary: In H2O-saturated supercritical CO2, H2S promotes the formation of a protective FeS layer, but increasing temperature or adding O-2 can destroy the integrity of this layer and enhance corrosion significantly. The corrosion is likely controlled by gas chemical reactions instead of electrochemical reactions, and the sulfide stress cracking susceptibility of strained pipeline steels is lower than expected.

Probing the initial corrosion behavior of X65 steel in CCUS-EOR environments with impure supercritical CO2 fluids

Chong Sun et al.

Summary: The initial corrosion behavior of X65 steel was studied in CO2-rich and H2O-rich environments with various impurities. It was found that X65 steel experiences more serious corrosion in the CO2-rich phase, with impurities playing a significant role in film evolution. Despite identical film compositions, the evolution and sedimentary state of corrosion products differ in the two environments.
