Land use for bioenergy: Synergies and trade-offs between sustainable development goals

Ivan Vera et al.

Summary: Bioenergy aims to reduce GHG emissions and contribute to climate change mitigation, but it raises sustainability concerns related to land use for dedicated energy crops. This study identified the main synergies and trade-offs associated with land use for energy crop production using the SDG framework, considering context-specific conditions such as biomass feedstock, previous land use, climate, soil type, and agricultural management. The results highlight the importance of considering these conditions in evaluating synergies and trade-offs for developing effective bioenergy policies and practices.

Can Miscanthus Fulfill Its Expectations as an Energy Biomass Source in the Current Conditions of the Czech Republic?-Potentials and Barriers

Jan Weger et al.

Summary: This article analyzes the main biological potentials and economic barriers of using Miscanthus as a new energy crop in agricultural practice in the Czech Republic and the Central-Eastern European region. The study finds that despite current economic conditions favoring annual crops, Miscanthus shows good adaptation to climate change and has the potential to become an important biomass crop. Key barriers and factors for its development include gene pool and agronomy improvement, subsidy policy changes, climate change trends, and further development of the bioeconomy.

Policy implications of competition between conventional and energy crops

J. Knapek et al.

Summary: The competitiveness of energy crops must consider specific climatic and soil parameters, and analyze based on the utilization of different land plots. Overestimating the potential biomass could lead to improper resource allocation. In fact, there are significant differences in profitability (and competitiveness) of energy biomass within different territories and land zones.

Biomass as a potential source of sustainable fuel, chemical and tribological materials - Overview

Anthony Chukwunonso Opia et al.

Summary: Pollution is a major challenge for sustainability, with industrial by-products being a significant source. The introduction of smoother burning fuels and less harmful chemicals is gaining ground due to environmental concerns. Biomass materials, with properties similar to fossil fuels, renewable and eco-friendly, are being considered as substitutes.
