Separation and recovery of rare earth from waste nickel-metal hydride batteries by phosphate based extraction-precipitation

Hailan Zhi et al.

Summary: A new extraction-precipitation strategy based on phosphate has been developed for the recovery of rare earth elements from waste nickel-metal hydride batteries. This method eliminates the need for saponification and organic solvents. The novel phosphates, particularly dibenzyl phosphate (DBP), exhibit high precipitation efficiencies for rare earth elements and contribute to improved solid-liquid separation.

Recovery of nickel, cobalt and rare-earth elements from spent nickel-metal-hydride battery: Laboratory tests and pilot trials

Masatoshi Takano et al.

Summary: The recycling of nickel, cobalt and rare earths from spent nickel-metal-hydride batteries was investigated. Nickel and cobalt were recovered as a nickel-cobalt mixed sulfide, which can be used as an intermediate raw material in existing nickel refineries. Rare earths were recovered as double sulfates, which can be recycled into industrial materials. The study showed that yttrium, a heavy rare earth, could be recovered by coprecipitation with a light rare-earth double sulfate, even though such precipitation was considered impossible due to the high solubility of yttrium double sulfate. The optimal conditions for leaching, double-sulfate precipitation, and sulfide precipitation reactions were determined in laboratory tests and successfully demonstrated in pilot tests. The estimated metal yields were high, with 87% nickel, 90% cobalt, 54% yttrium, 99% lanthanum, and 99% cerium. The impurities in the recovered materials were low, demonstrating the high separation performance of this process.

Critical Evaluation of the Potential of Organic Acids for the Environmentally Friendly Recycling of Spent Lithium-Ion Batteries

Eva Gerold et al.

Summary: The recovery of valuable metals from spent lithium-ion batteries is necessary, but the environmental impact of recycling processes is a concern. Organic acids, low leaching temperatures, and higher solid-liquid ratios can improve the environmental-friendliness and energy efficiency of the recycling process. Citric acid, combined with hydrogen peroxide, appears to be a suitable alternative to inorganic acids in hydrometallurgical recycling of lithium-ion batteries.

Recovery of rare earth elements from spent NiMH batteries using subcritical water extraction with citric acid

Jason Constantine et al.

Summary: This study successfully recovered rare earth elements from spent nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries using subcritical water extraction (SWE) with citric acid as the leaching reagent. The results showed that leaching efficiency increased with increasing acid concentration, reaction time, and temperature, while it decreased as the solid to liquid ratio (S/L) increased. Selective precipitation with diluted waste phosphoric acid (H3PO4) further enhanced the recovery efficiency.
