The complex associations between late life depression, fear of falling and risk of falls. A systematic review and meta-analysis

Eleonora Gambaro et al.

Summary: The study found that depressive symptoms in older people may lead to an increase in subsequent falls, but the meta-analysis results did not show a significant association between depression and falls. There seems to be a hypothesis of an interdependent association between FOF and the risk of falls. Therapeutic interventions aimed at reducing depressive symptoms and FOF could help decrease the rate of falls.

Step length and fall risk in adults with chronic kidney disease: a pilot study

Atsumi Kimura et al.

Summary: This study explored the use of step length as a marker of gait impairment and fall risk in adults with chronic kidney disease. Results suggest that step length and gait speed may contribute additively to the assessment of fall risk in a general adult nephrology population.

Diagnosis, prevalence, and mortality of sarcopenia in dialysis patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Xiaoyu Shu et al.

Summary: There is no consensus on the prevalence and impact of sarcopenia in patients with end-stage renal disease undergoing dialysis. This review aimed to summarize the diagnostic criteria, prevalence, and impact of sarcopenia on mortality in these patients. The results showed that sarcopenia is highly prevalent in dialysis patients and is associated with increased mortality risk. Standardization of diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia is necessary, and further longitudinal studies are needed to investigate its prevalence and prognostic value in dialysis patients.

Experiences of falling and depression: Results from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing

Summary: This study found an association between fall experiences in the past two years and depressive symptoms, particularly in older age groups. Screening for self-reported fall experiences may help in preventing depressive symptoms among the population.

Depression in dialysis

Na Tian et al.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the latest information on depression among dialysis patients, showing that depression significantly impacts various aspects of dialysis patients' lives. However, many mysteries remain to be solved, such as the uncertain factors affecting prevalence rates and the need for long-term studies on treatment outcomes.

The Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB): A Quick and Useful Tool for Fall Risk Stratification Among Older Primary Care Patients

Sarah A. Welch et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the use of SPPB in assessing fall risk in older adults, finding that both SPPB and its components can independently predict fall risk. Over a 4-year follow-up period, low total baseline SPPB and gait time performances predicted higher fall risk. Stratifying the sample by the STEADI model revealed that those with the lowest SPPB scores and a positive fall risk screen had the highest fall risk.
