Summary: The study found that depressive symptoms in older people may lead to an increase in subsequent falls, but the meta-analysis results did not show a significant association between depression and falls. There seems to be a hypothesis of an interdependent association between FOF and the risk of falls. Therapeutic interventions aimed at reducing depressive symptoms and FOF could help decrease the rate of falls.

Diagnosis, prevalence, and mortality of sarcopenia in dialysis patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: There is no consensus on the prevalence and impact of sarcopenia in patients with end-stage renal disease undergoing dialysis. This review aimed to summarize the diagnostic criteria, prevalence, and impact of sarcopenia on mortality in these patients. The results showed that sarcopenia is highly prevalent in dialysis patients and is associated with increased mortality risk. Standardization of diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia is necessary, and further longitudinal studies are needed to investigate its prevalence and prognostic value in dialysis patients.

The Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB): A Quick and Useful Tool for Fall Risk Stratification Among Older Primary Care Patients

Summary: This study evaluated the use of SPPB in assessing fall risk in older adults, finding that both SPPB and its components can independently predict fall risk. Over a 4-year follow-up period, low total baseline SPPB and gait time performances predicted higher fall risk. Stratifying the sample by the STEADI model revealed that those with the lowest SPPB scores and a positive fall risk screen had the highest fall risk.
