Adjusting solar-induced fluorescence to nadir-viewing provides a better proxy for GPP

Dalei Hao et al.

Summary: The study found that diurnal SIFnadir has stronger correlations with GPP than SIFobs for field measurements, with an increase in mean coefficient of determination (R-2) of 0.05-0.07 for the far-red band and 0.11-0.20 for the red band. SIFnadir shows comparable performance to SIFtotal for both far-red and red bands. The difference in estimating GPP between SIFnadir and SIFobs is dominated by the viewing angle effects, but the correlation between light use efficiency (LUE) and f(esc) further determines the different performance of SIFnadir and SIFtotal in estimating GPP. TROPOMI-based analysis confirms that SIFnadir overall has higher correlations with AmeriFlux GPP than SIFobs for different plant functional types and shows similar performance to SIFtotal. Compared to SIFtotal, the estimation of SIFnadir independent of viewing angle effects does not require any canopy structure parameters, and thus offers promising potential for reliably estimating regional and global GPP.

Combining near-infrared radiance of vegetation and fluorescence spectroscopy to detect effects of abiotic changes and stresses

Yelu Zeng et al.

Summary: Solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) and near-infrared reflectance of vegetation (NIRv) have been combined to extract the fluorescence yield (Phi(F)) in order to assess plant physiological state and response to environmental changes. The proposed method was evaluated in multiple ways and showed promising results in capturing seasonal variation of fluorescence yield changes. The use of SIF/NIRvR as a proxy of Phi(F) allows for detecting stress-induced limitations in photosynthesis without the need for photosynthetically active radiation input.

A New Global Solar-induced Chlorophyll Fluorescence (SIF) Data Product from TanSat Measurements

Lu Yao et al.

Summary: TanSat is the third satellite for global CO2 monitoring, capable of detecting weak solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence signals and successfully retrieving global SIF products using a physically based algorithm from March 2017 to February 2018. Comparative analysis shows regional biases between the IAPCAS TanSat SIF product and the data-driven SVD SIF product, with linear correlations above 0.73 for all seasons.

Summary: This study presents the ChinaSpec network of ground-based continuous SIF observations at flux tower sites in mainland China, demonstrating how the synergy of continuous SIF measurements with EC flux measurements can advance terrestrial ecosystem science and promote collaborations between optical remote sensing and EC flux observation communities. The network aims to provide long-term ground-based SIF measurements and improve understanding of biosphere-atmosphere carbon exchange controls, ultimately contributing to global ecosystem and carbon cycle research.

Optimizing the Empirical Parameters of the Data-Driven Algorithm for SIF Retrieval for SIFIS Onboard TECIS-1 Satellite

Chu Zou et al.

Summary: The study investigated the influence of empirical parameters on a data-driven algorithm for retrieving satellite-based solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF). Results showed that the fitting window, polynomial order, and number of feature vectors were the main factors affecting retrieval accuracy. Optimal parameters for far-red SIF retrieval included a fitting window of 735-758 nm, a second-order polynomial, and four feature vectors. In the case of red SIF retrieval, using a second-order polynomial and seven feature vectors in the fitting window of 682-697 nm was optimal.

First Investigation of the Relationship Between Solar-Induced Chlorophyll Fluorescence Observed by TanSat and Gross Primary Productivity

Shanshan Du et al.

Summary: This article investigates the relationship between TanSat SIF and EC GPP, finding strong correlations at different scales and better estimation performance of TanSat SIF. The response of SIF to absorbed photosynthetically active radiation and environmental factors is similar to GPP, demonstrating the potential for estimating GPP. Incorporating TanSat SIF with other satellite SIF products could open a new era for carbon cycling and ecosystem functioning studies.
