The Age-Dependent Association Between Vascular Risk Factors and Depressed Mood

Maria Bloechl et al.

Summary: Vascular risk factor burden in midlife is associated with levels of depressed mood, but this association is weaker in later life. This highlights the importance of vascular health in midlife for maintaining mental health.

Quantifying Deviations of Brain Structure and Function in Major Depressive Disorder Across Neuroimaging Modalities

Summary: Neurobiological differences between patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and healthy individuals were found to be remarkably small, making individual prediction difficult and highlighting the predominance of group similarity.

Associations of depression and regional brain structure across the adult lifespan: Pooled analyses of six population-based and two clinical cohort studies in the European Lifebrain consortium

Julia Binnewies et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between depressive symptoms and depression status with brain structures, and found that in clinical patient-control cohorts, both depressive symptoms and depression status were associated with lower thickness and volume of specific brain regions, while no such associations were observed in the general population.

Large-scale GWAS reveals genetic architecture of brain white matter microstructure and genetic overlap with cognitive and mental health traits (n=17,706)

Bingxin Zhao et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the genetic architecture of 110 tract-based DTI parameters and conducted GWAS to identify novel genetic variants associated with white matter tracts. Results suggested a highly polygenic architecture of genetic influence across the genome, with enrichment of genetic effects for active SNPs annotated by central nervous system cells. GWAS identified 213 significant SNPs associated with 90 DTI parameters, and gene-based association study prioritized 112 significant genes, many of which are novel and have implications for cognitive and mental health traits.

Confound modelling in UK Biobank brain imaging

Fidel Alfaro-Almagro et al.

Summary: Dealing with confounds is essential in large cohort studies to address unexplained variance and spurious correlations. The UK Biobank is a powerful resource for studying associations between imaging and non-imaging measures, but the high statistical power also increases sensitivity to confound effects. Researchers must carefully consider these factors.

Direction of association between Cardiovascular risk and depressive symptoms during the first 18 years of life: A prospective birth cohort study

Anna B. Chaplin et al.

Summary: This study found that the cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk score in mid-adolescence was associated with depressive symptoms in early-adulthood, while depressive symptoms in childhood were not associated with the CVD risk score in mid-adolescence. Childhood inflammatory markers were associated with the CVD risk score in mid-adolescence, and adolescent CVD risk score mediated the associations between childhood inflammatory markers and depressive symptoms in early-adulthood.

Common genetic variation influencing human white matter microstructure

Bingxin Zhao et al.

Summary: The study identified common genetic variants influencing white matter microstructure and detected multiple associated loci, some of which were related to brain diseases. Additionally, genetic correlations were observed between white matter microstructure and a wide range of complex traits and diseases.
