Psychological mechanisms connected to dissociation: Generating hypotheses using network analyses

Emma Cernis et al.

Summary: This study used network analyses to explore the relationship between dissociative experiences and ten candidate mechanisms, and found that cognitive appraisals and factors relating to heightened sensitivity to affect are closely connected to dissociation. Cognitive appraisals were identified as the strongest connection with dissociation, and further research is needed to determine the causal direction of these connections.

From brooding to detachment: Rumination longitudinally predicts an increase in depersonalization and derealisation

Miriam Vannikov-Lugassi et al.

Summary: Rumination and DEP-DER levels tend to increase and decrease concurrently over time, with rumination predicting a longitudinal increase in DEP-DER. This suggests that rumination may be an antecedent of DEP-DER, but not vice versa.

Dissociation in relation to other mental health conditions: An exploration using network analysis

Emma Cernis et al.

Summary: The study explored the relationship between dissociative experiences, common mental health conditions, and psychotic experiences using network approaches. It found that dissociation is directly connected to hallucinations, grandiosity, paranoia, cognitive disorganization, anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress symptoms, and may have indirect influences on insomnia and distress tolerance.

A new perspective and assessment measure for common dissociative experiences: 'Felt Sense of Anomaly'

Emma Cernis et al.

Summary: The study aimed to conceptualize and empirically establish a discrete subset of dissociative experiences termed 'Felt Sense of Anomaly' (FSA) and develop a corresponding assessment measure. Factor analysis identified seven ways in which FSA-dissociation manifested, and the resulting measure showed good validity and reliability across different groups.

Cognitive appraisals of dissociation in psychosis: a new brief measure

Emma Cernis et al.

Summary: This study developed a method to measure appraisals of dissociation in psychosis, found a relationship between these appraisals and psychotic experiences like paranoia and hallucinations, and demonstrated the ability of these appraisals to explain variance in psychotic symptoms.
