Anxiety and depression among Chinese children with and without reading disabilities

Li-Chih Wang

Summary: This study compared anxiety and depression among male and female Chinese children with and without reading disabilities, and explored the different impacts of anxiety and depression on children's reading comprehension. It found that anxiety level was significantly higher in female children with RD, while depression level was significantly lower in typically developing children. The results highlighted the predictive abilities of gender and anxiety for reading comprehension, with a significant moderating effect of gender on the ability of anxiety to predict reading comprehension in the typically developing group but not in the RD group.

Childhood urbanicity interacts with polygenic risk for depression to affect stress-related medial prefrontal function

Xiao Zhang et al.

Summary: Global urbanization is on the rise, leading to increased stress and mental health risks such as depression. This study found that urban childhood is associated with reduced gray matter volumes in the mPFC, and that the interaction between urbanicity and trait anxiety-depression exaggerates physiological responses to threat contexts, affecting the risk for depression. Additionally, developmental urbanicity interacts with genetic and behavioral factors to influence the mPFC neural response to threat contexts.
