Lateral spectrum splitting system with perovskite photovoltaic cells

Benjamin D. Chrysler et al.

Summary: This study examines the potential of a multijunction spectrum-splitting PV solar energy system using perovskite PV cells. Spectrum splitting allows different energy band gap PV cells to be combined and laterally separated, avoiding the complexity of tandem stack architectures. A spectrum-splitting system is evaluated using perovskite PV cells with energy band gaps of 2.30, 1.63, and 1.25 eV, which have demonstrated conversion efficiencies of 10.4%, 21.6%, and 20.4% respectively. The study presents the design of a cascaded volume holographic lens for spectral separation and develops a rigorous coupled wave model for computing the diffraction efficiency of the hologram.

Shockley: Queisser detailed balance limit after 60 years

Tom Markvart

Summary: This article reviews the main results and developments of the Shockley-Queisser paper, discussing the detailed balance between incident and emitted photon beams and comparing its efficiency limit with other popular limits. The article also explores the impact of the generalized Planck law on the efficiency and current-voltage characteristic of the cell, and outlines a potential extension of the detailed balance into the realm of thermodynamics. Practical applications of the results in solar cell operation and mechanisms for exceeding the Shockley-Queisser limit are also briefly discussed.

Triple-junction solar cells with 39.5% terrestrial and 34.2% space efficiency enabled by thick quantum well superlattices

Ryan M. France et al.

Summary: The design of multijunction solar cells takes into account both the theoretical optimal bandgap combination and the realistic limitations of materials. By modifying the bandgap of the middle cell using thick GaInAs/GaAsP strain-balanced quantum well solar cells, a high-efficiency triple-junction inverted metamorphic multijunction device has been achieved.

The race for the best silicon bottom cell: Efficiency and cost evaluation of perovskite-silicon tandem solar cells

Christoph Messmer et al.

Summary: Perovskite-silicon tandem solar cells have shown rapid progress in the past 5 years and are being investigated as candidates for the next generation of industrial PV devices. Silicon heterojunction technology currently dominates tandem research, but transferring these results to industrial production remains a challenge.
