Self-healable recyclable thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers: Enabled by metal-ligand bonds between the cerium(III) triflate and phloretin

Gao-Fei Pan et al.

Summary: This study developed highly efficient self-healing materials using cerium(III) triflate [Ce(SO3CF3)(3)] as the metal center and phloretin as the ligand to synthesize a self-healable polyurethane elastomer. The optimized sample showed high tensile strength, stretchability, toughness, and healing efficiency, as well as good thermoplasticity and recyclability. Furthermore, a flexible conductive electrode with self-healing capacity was obtained by compositing the sample with flexible graphene-based conductive paper, showing potential applications in wearable devices and flexible electronics.

Ranking of potential hazards from microplastics polymers in the marine environment

Zhihao Yuan et al.

Summary: This study developed a risk assessment model to rank microplastics (MPs) of potential health concern in marine exposure pathways. The model considered parameters such as toxicity potential, particle size distribution, and degradation status. The screening strategy identified certain polymers as top-ranking contributors to the risk. The findings can inform scientific community and policymakers for better management of MPs.

Interfacial controllable heterojunctions nanosheets as photothermal catalyzer for cyclic photothermal self-healing of polydimethylsiloxane coating

Tong Wang et al.

Summary: A strategy to improve the self-healing cycles of coatings was proposed by integrating photothermal nanomaterials into the coating. The photothermal heterojunction composed of Bi2MoO6 and hydrothermal carbonation carbon (HTCC) was designed and integrated into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to enhance the photothermal self-healing efficiency. The results showed that by adjusting the interface combination degree, the heterojunction exhibited a broader range of light absorption, higher photothermal efficiency, and improved self-healing performance of the coating.

Fast self-healing and antifouling polyurethane/fluorinated polysiloxane-microcapsules-silica composite material

Jie Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a fast self-healing and antifouling composite material called PFPMS was prepared. It exhibited excellent mechanical and antifouling properties, and achieved fast self-healing through the cross-linking reaction of ruptured microcapsules. The micro-nano-dual-scale surface formed by the microcapsules and nano-SiO2 contributed to the superior antifouling performance of PFPMS.

Fouling resistant silicone coating with self-healing induced by metal coordination

Peng Hu et al.

Summary: The new poly(dimethylsiloxane) coating cross-linked via coordination bonds between 2-(2-benzimidazolyl)ethanethiol (BET) and zinc ions shows improved adhesion strength and self-healing ability, leading to enhanced fouling resistance against marine bacteria and diatoms. The presence of zinc-imidazole complexes further contributes to the antifouling function of the coating.

Cationic UV Curing of Bioderived Epoxy Furan-Based Coatings: Tailoring the Final Properties by In Situ Formation of Hybrid Network and Addition of Monofunctional Monomer

Lorenzo Pezzana et al.

Summary: Biobased monomers are functionalized with epoxy groups to produce new cationic UV-curable monomers for coating applications. The properties of the final UV-cured coatings can be easily tailored by adjusting the ratio of different monomers or incorporating inorganic networks. The thermal and mechanical properties of the coatings are significantly influenced by the content of TEOS and GFA in the formulations.
