Tensile creep behavior of a heat treated ?-solidified ?-TiAl alloy: The development of dynamic recrystallization and the role of B2 phase

Zhenquan Liang et al.

Summary: The tensile creep behavior of a heat treated beta-solidified gamma-TiAl alloy was investigated at 800 degrees C and 250-300 MPa. The heat treatment improved the creep resistance of the alloy. Creep deformation is dominated by viscous dislocation glide and assisted by mechanical twinning. Twin boundary and TiB hinder dislocation movement and strengthen creep resistance. Dynamic recrystallization and B2 phase precipitation occur during creep. Creep voids prefer to nucleate at the gamma-B2 and B2-colony interfaces, leading to brittle-ductile mixed fracture.

Decomposition and phase transformation mechanisms of a2 lamellae in ß-solidified γ-TiAl alloys

Yan Liu et al.

Summary: The decomposition mechanism of (alpha(2) /gamma) lamellae was investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) techniques. The results revealed the facilitated alpha(2)->ss phase transformation and the formation of ellipsoidal omega(o) particles. The mechanism of the lath-shaped omega(o) phase was attributed to both element segregation and strain accommodation caused by the ss o precipitate in alpha(2) lamellae. These findings provide insights into the decomposition mechanism of (alpha(2)/gamma) lamellae and have implications for controlling microstructures and improving the performance of ss-solidified gamma-TiAl alloys.

Evading the strength-ductility trade-off at room temperature and achieving ultrahigh plasticity at 800°C in a TiAl alloy

Guoming Zheng et al.

Summary: This study developed two new microstructures, T-T and T-D structures, in the Ti-43.5Al-4Nb-1Mo-0.18 (TNM) alloy, which significantly improved the alloy's strength and ductility. The formation of deformation twins and the promotion of dynamic recrystallization were found to play important roles in enhancing the plasticity at both room temperature and elevated temperatures.

Formation mechanism of γ twins in β-solidified γ-TiAl alloys

Yan Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, the formation mechanism of gamma twins in TiAl alloys was analyzed at the atomic scale using HADDF-STEM. The results revealed the process of growth defects in alpha(2)-platelets transforming into the gamma phase, as well as the rearrangement of defects into gamma and gamma(T) platelets during annealing. This provides significant insights for microstructure control and performance improvement in TiAl alloys.

Quasi-in-situ investigation on microstructure degradation of a fully lamellar TiAl alloy during creep

Yichao Wang et al.

Summary: The microstructure degradation of a fully lamellar TNM alloy during creep was investigated. The results showed that the fully lamellar structure exhibited gradual degradation during creep, with dynamic recrystallization and phase transformation occurring in the primary creep region, obstacles provided by fine clusters affecting dislocation movement in the steady-state creep region, and cavity formation and lamellar structure damage in the tertiary creep region.

Summary: The study investigates the precipitation behavior of the omega(o) phase and creep properties of a Ti-45Al-9Nb-0.5B alloy at intermediate temperatures. It shows that the imposed stress contributes to the nucleation and growth of the omega(o) phase, which can reduce the creep resistance of the material. Additionally, dynamic recrystallization is identified as a primary cause of microstructural degradation.
