Tirzepatide Once Weekly for the Treatment of Obesity

Ania M. Jastreboff et al.

Summary: In this 72-week trial in participants with obesity, once-weekly doses of 5 mg, 10 mg, or 15 mg of tirzepatide provided substantial and sustained reductions in body weight, and improvements in cardiometabolic measures were also observed.

Extra-pulmonary vein driver mapping and ablation for persistent atrial fibrillation in obese patients

Xiaofeng Hu et al.

Summary: Obesity is associated with increased complexity of driver regions in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation. Driver ablation treatment leads to better long-term outcomes compared to conventional ablation in obese patients.

Once-Weekly Semaglutide in Adults with Overweight or Obesity

John P. H. Wilding et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that for individuals with obesity, once-weekly use of 2.4 mg semaglutide in combination with lifestyle intervention can lead to sustained and clinically relevant weight loss, with significant improvements in cardiometabolic risk factors and physical functioning reported by participants.

Supervised Obesity Reduction Trial for AF ablation patients: from the SORT-AF trial

Nele Gessler et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of weight reduction on AF ablation outcomes in obese patients. Results show that AF ablation is safe and successful in obese patients, with weight reduction having positive effects on patients with persistent AF.

Prognostic markers of all-cause mortality in patients with atrial fibrillation: data from the prospective long-term registry of the German Atrial Fibrillation NETwork (AFNET)

Michael Nabauer et al.

Summary: The study found that mortality in atrial fibrillation patients primarily stems from heart failure, peripheral artery disease, chronic obstructive lung disease, chronic kidney disease, and diabetes mellitus, which should be targeted in efforts to lower mortality. Additionally, sex-specific age was identified as the strongest predictor of mortality.

Beyond cardioversion, ablation and pharmacotherapies: Risk factors, lifestyle change and behavioral counseling strategies in the prevention and treatment of atrial fibrillation

Nishaki K. Mehta et al.

Summary: Preventing atrial fibrillation (AF) by addressing risk factors and unhealthy lifestyle habits is crucial in reducing the global burden of the disease. Behavioral counseling approaches, including assessing the patient's readiness to change and using motivational interviewing, are proven methodologies to overcome common barriers to modifying these factors. Beyond counseling skills, there is a need for lifestyle modification by non-behavioral scientists to have a significant impact on patients.

Atrial Fibrillation and Obesity Reverse Remodeling of Atrial Substrate With Weight Reduction

Rajiv Mahajan et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effect of weight loss on the atrial substrate for atrial fibrillation in sheep with sustained obesity. Weight loss of 30% was associated with structural and electrophysiological reverse remodeling and reduced propensity for AF. These findings suggest the direct role of obesity in AF substrate and the potential benefit of weight reduction in patients with AF.
