Effect of pre-concentration on membrane solvent extraction process for the recovery of rare earth elements from dilute acidic leachate

Ayse Yuksekdag et al.

Summary: The pre-concentration and separation processes of Rare Earth Elements (REEs) were investigated in this study. The nitric acid leachate of e-waste was pretreated to improve its quality before concentration. Nanofiltration was used for pre-concentration, resulting in a triplication of REEs concentration under optimum conditions. A flat sheet supported liquid membrane process was successfully utilized to extract REEs from the pre-treated leachate, with bis-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) showing higher separation efficiency compared to di-2,4,4,-trimethylpentyl phosphinic acid (Cyanex 272). The processes of direct membrane solvent extraction and MSX with pre-concentration were optimized, and the pre-concentration step was found to increase the efficiency of the MSX process and enable acid recovery. A more environmentally friendly and economical process scheme involving acid recovery from both nanofiltration permeate and post-MSX leaching residue was proposed.

Microalgae-assisted fixed-film activated sludge MFC for landfill leachate treatment and energy recovery

Khaled Elmaadawy et al.

Summary: The study developed a new MFC system coupled with integrated fixed-film activated sludge (IFAS) to enhance treatment efficiency and energy production. Experimental results showed that the MFC-IFAS/MA system produced higher power density and nitrogen removal compared to other systems. The superior electrochemical behavior and nitrogen removal of MFC-IFAS/MA were attributed to the symbiosis between fixed-biofilm and microalgae assimilation. This study provided new insights into the application of MFC and the symbiotic relationship between microalgae and IFAS.

Occurrence of pharmaceuticals and plasticizers in leachate from municipal landfills of different age

Amirhossein Rezaei Adaryani et al.

Summary: The disposal of pharmaceuticals and plastic waste produces contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in landfill leachate. This study found that CECs, including pharmaceuticals and plasticizers, can persist in leachate many years after landfill closure. The transport of these compounds with landfill leachate is expected to continue as long as leachate is generated in the landfill.

Summary: This study analyzed landfill leachate data from 220 landfills in 46 countries across Europe, Middle East, Asia, Africa, and America using multivariate statistical approaches. The results showed that inorganic parameters dominated the principal component analyses (PCA) and accounted for the majority of the variation in the data. These highly correlated parameters could provide important information for evaluating the transport and biodegradation mechanisms of leachate, as well as their elimination potential during monitoring activities at landfills.

Acidogenic fermentation of food waste and sewage sludge mixture: Effect of operating parameters on process performance and safety aspects

Lionel Nguemna Tayou et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the production of volatile fatty acids (VFA) as added-value products from the mixture of food waste and sewage sludge through pilot scale acidogenic fermentation process. The results show that mesophilic fermentation on thermally hydrolysed feedstock ensures stability in terms of VFA production at high concentration and CODVFA/CODSOL ratio. The assessment of explosive risk reveals that the thermally hydrolysed feedstock has a lower risk compared to other conditions.

Effect of metals on the regulation of acidogenic metabolism enhancing biohydrogen and carboxylic acids production from brewery spent grains: Microbial dynamics and biochemical analysis

Omprakash Sarkar et al.

Summary: This study investigates the production of biohydrogen and carboxylic acids (CA) from brewery spent grains (BSG) through mixed culture acidogenic fermentation in the presence of high concentrations of cobalt, iron, nickel, and zinc. The addition of these metals significantly enhanced the production of biohydrogen, CA, and solvents. Furthermore, a combination of all four metals resulted in the highest CA accumulation. Metagenomic analysis revealed the dominant presence of Firmicutes, particularly Clostridium, in the mixed metal-containing reactors. Notably, dehydrogenase activity showed a significant correlation with CA and biohydrogen evolution upon metal addition.
