Fredholm Homotopies for Strongly-Disordered 2D Insulators

Alex Bols et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigate the topological indices of Fermionic time-reversal invariant topological insulators in two dimensions under strong Anderson localization. We propose a method for interpolating certain Fredholm operators in these systems and use this technique to prove the bulk-edge correspondence for mobility-gapped 2D topological insulators with Fermionic time-reversal symmetry (class AII). Furthermore, we provide an alternative proof of the bulk-edge correspondence for strongly-disordered integer quantum Hall systems and demonstrate the stability of the Z(2) index in the mobility gap regime.

Robust edge modes in dislocated systems of subwavelength resonators

Habib Ammari et al.

Summary: This study investigates a one-dimensional array of subwavelength resonators, proving the existence of a subwavelength band gap and demonstrating the ability to place localized modes at any position within the gap by introducing a dislocation. Additionally, the stability properties of the corresponding finite array of resonators are analyzed, highlighting the value of customizing eigenvalue positions within the band gap.

Is the continuum SSH model topological?

Jacob Shapiro et al.

Summary: The SSH model is a one-dimensional translation-invariant model with a non-trivial topological phase. The Hamiltonian and winding number of the model depend on the ratio of hopping coefficients. We exhibit two homotopically equivalent continuum Hamiltonians whose tight binding limits correspond to SSH models with different topological indices.

Mathematical theory for topological photonic materials in one dimension

Junshan Lin et al.

Summary: This work presents a rigorous theory for topological photonic materials in one dimension, focusing on the existence of interface modes induced by topological properties of the bulk structure. Conditions for the opening of a band gap and the existence of an interface mode are determined for different types of photonic structures. The quantization of Zak phase and the stability of the interface mode under perturbations are also investigated. The transfer matrix method and oscillation theory for Sturm-Liouville operators are utilized for the analysis.

Delocalized Spectra of Landau Operators on Helical Surfaces

Yosuke Kubota et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the Landau operator, or quantum Hall Hamiltonian, on a flat surface, which has a spectrum consisting of a discrete set of infinitely-degenerate Landau levels. By studying surfaces with asymptotically constant curvature, the non-local coarse indices of the Landau levels can be assigned. As an application, it is proven that Landau operators on helical surfaces have no spectral gaps above the lowest Landau level.
