Reintroduction of highly pathogenic avian influenza A H7N9 virus in southwestern China

Dongchang He et al.

Summary: Highly pathogenic H7N9 avian influenza virus has emerged in China since 2016, with recent prevalence in northern China. However, in 2021, several strains of highly pathogenic H7N9 reappeared in southwestern China, raising questions about their re-emergence or reintroduction. Phylogenetic evidence shows that the H7N9 viruses isolated in Yunnan in 2020 migrated from northern to southwestern China, indicating a novel epicenter in H7N9 dissemination. Furthermore, a cleavage motif re-emerged due to the T341I mutation, suggesting parallel evolution. This cross-region transmission, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, highlights the need for additional surveillance studies to determine the geographic distribution and spread of the highly pathogenic H7N9 virus.

Summary: In early 2021, novel H7N9 variants of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus were found in live poultry markets in China, which current vaccines were unable to protect against. This highlights the need for enhanced surveillance and updating of vaccine strains to address potential outbreaks.

Summary: The multi-type birth-death model with sampling is an evolution dynamic model that quantifies past population dynamics in structured populations based on phylogenetic trees, implemented using the bdmm package. Important algorithmic changes to bdmm allows for the analysis of more genetic samples, improving numerical robustness and efficiency, leading to increased precision of parameter estimates, particularly for structured models with a high number of inferred parameters.

H7N9 Influenza Virus in China

Summary: In early 2013, human infections caused by a novel H7N9 avian influenza virus were first reported in China, which later evolved into highly pathogenic strains. Since 2017, nationwide vaccination of chickens has successfully controlled H7N9 avian influenza infections in poultry and prevented human infections.

Value chain analysis of yellow broiler industry in Guangxi, China to inform H7N9 influenza control strategies

Hao Tang et al.

Summary: Yellow broilers play a crucial role in the value chain in Guangxi, China, where biosecurity issues are prevalent. The study highlighted the lack of comprehensive understanding, governance structures, and relevant practices in the value chain, suggesting a need for government-industry partnerships to address gaps in biosecurity management.

Different intervention strategies toward live poultry markets against avian influenza A (H7N9) virus: Model-based assessment

Summary: This study quantified the effects of different interventions towards Live Poultry Markets (LPMs) for controlling H7N9 transmission in Guangdong Province. Temporary, seasonal, and permanent closure of LPMs can substantially reduce transmission risk, while the 1110 policy has limited effectiveness in preventing H7N9 transmission.

What can phylodynamics bring to animal health research?

Claire Guinat et al.

Summary: Infectious diseases pose a major burden on global economies, public health, and animal health. Phylodynamic techniques, which infer pathogen transmission dynamics from genetic data, have shown promise in enhancing disease management and informing more effective control strategies. These techniques can address fundamental epidemiological questions and quantify spillover events at the wildlife-livestock interface.
