Exact solutions for the wrinkle patterns of confined elastic shells

Summary: Complex textured surfaces are common in nature and industry, and controlling the formation of wrinkles with both ordered and disordered features has been a challenge. This study introduces a new approach using a Lagrange multiplier to understand confined elastic shells' wrinkles, and presents a set of geometric rules for predicting and designing complex wrinkle patterns.

Curvature-Driven Wrinkling of Thin Elastic Shells

Summary: In this study, the energy required to stamp a thin elastic shell flat is calculated using a rigorous method involving Gamma-convergence. A limiting variational problem for effective displacement of the shell is derived, along with a solution for maximizing area coverage on a plane. Convex analysis is used to characterize the accompanying patterns, and partial uniqueness and regularity theorems are obtained from the method of characteristics on the ordered part of the shell.
