A unified method for measuring noble gas isotope ratios in air, water, and volcanic gases via dynamic mass spectrometry

Alan M. Seltzer et al.

Summary: We describe a new method for the purification, transfer, and analysis of heavy noble gas isotope ratios in water, air, or volcanic gas samples using a dynamic dual-inlet isotope-ratio mass spectrometer (IRMS). This method allows for highly accurate and precise measurements of Ar, Kr, and Xe isotope ratios via IRMS, independent of sample composition, thereby opening the door to air, water, or volcanic gas analyses all made with the same technique.

Strong Southern Ocean carbon uptake evident in airborne observations

Matthew C. Long et al.

Summary: The Southern Ocean plays a crucial role in determining atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. This study found that the annual mean carbon uptake south of 45 degrees S is -0.53 +/- 0.23 petagrams per year, which is higher than some recent interpretations of profiling float observations.

Historical increases in land-derived nutrient inputs may alleviate effects of a changing physical climate on the oceanic carbon cycle

Fabrice Lacroix et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that increased terrigenous nutrient inputs can enhance global marine NPP, offsetting the decrease due to increased upper ocean stratification. The relative increase in coastal ocean NPP is mainly driven by increased riverine inputs, exceeding 100% in some regions. The effects of enhanced terrigenous nutrient inputs also extend offshore, resulting in increased NPP in the open ocean.

Diffusion controls the ventilation of a Pacific Shadow Zone above abyssal overturning

Mark Holzer et al.

Summary: The study reveals a Pacific shadow zone (PSZ) with mean water ages exceeding 1400 years, primarily supplied by Antarctic and North Atlantic ventilated waters diffusing from below and from the south. Half of the PSZ waters re-surface in the Southern Ocean, a quarter in the subarctic Pacific. Despite strong overturning, the abyssal North Pacific also has mean re-surfacing times exceeding 1400 years due to diffusion into the overlying PSZ, suggesting that diffusive transports are a leading control on Pacific nutrient and carbon storage.
