Estimating ocean net primary productivity from daily cycles of carbon biomass measured by profiling floats

Adam C. C. Stoer et al.

Summary: In this study, NPP in the southern hemisphere's temperate and polar regions is inferred from bio-optical measurements, demonstrating the relationship between NPP and daily cycles. This approach provides valuable basin-scale, ground-truthed information for assessing changes in subsurface primary productivity related to climate.

Partitioning the Export of Distinct Biogenic Carbon Pools in the Northeast Pacific Ocean Using a Biogeochemical Profiling Float

Yibin Huang et al.

Summary: We investigated the cycling and export potential of different biogenic carbon pools in the Northeast Pacific Ocean using data from chemical and bio-optical sensors. Our study revealed complex carbon cycle dynamics among these carbon pools throughout the year. We also demonstrated the importance of utilizing multiple sensors on biogeochemical profiling floats for a more comprehensive understanding of upper ocean carbon cycle dynamics.

Carbon to Nitrogen Uptake Ratios Observed Across the Southern Ocean by the SOCCOM Profiling Float Array

Kenneth S. Johnson et al.

Summary: Measurements of pH and nitrate were used to study the ratios of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and nitrate (NO3) uptake in the Southern Ocean during the spring to summer bloom period. The effects of atmospheric CO2 exchange and mixing were separated from phytoplankton uptake using the B-SOSE model. The corrected, in situ biological uptake ratio (C:N) was found to be similar to the Redfield Ratio (RR), with a few exceptions.

Strong Southern Ocean carbon uptake evident in airborne observations

Matthew C. Long et al.

Summary: The Southern Ocean plays a crucial role in determining atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. This study found that the annual mean carbon uptake south of 45 degrees S is -0.53 +/- 0.23 petagrams per year, which is higher than some recent interpretations of profiling float observations.

Delayed-Mode Quality Control of Oxygen, Nitrate, and pH Data on SOCCOM Biogeochemical Profiling Floats

Tanya L. Maurer et al.

Summary: The SOCCOM project has deployed 194 profiling floats equipped with biogeochemical sensors, and post-deployment quality control for float-based oxygen, nitrate, and pH data is essential. In situ calibration of chemical sensors using atmospheric reanalysis and empirical algorithms can improve accuracy. A methodology and software have been developed to visualize float data, assess QC adjustments, and support a growing number of BGC floats globally, demonstrating successful post-deployment calibration and QC of over 250 floats.
