An epithelial signalling centre in sharks supports homology of tooth morphogenesis in vertebrates

Alexandre P. Thiery et al.

Summary: Tooth development in mammals is regulated by the enamel knot signalling center. While there are differences in signalling, the presence of an enamel knot in non-mammalian vertebrates is still debated. Through studying sharks, researchers found similarities in the expression of fgf3, fgf10, and shh, as well as changes in tooth phenotypes following perturbations of canonical Wnt signalling, which supports the conservation of the enamel knot-like signalling center throughout vertebrates. This suggests that tooth types in different animals follow a similar developmental plan, and the lineage-specific differences in signalling do not refute the homology of this signalling center.

Hide and seek shark teeth in Random Forests: machine learning applied to Scyliorhinus canicula populations

Fidji Berio et al.

Summary: In this study, differences in tooth shape and form between the Scyliorhinus canicula populations in the northeastern Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea were investigated. Results showed that the Atlantic population has bigger, blunter teeth and fewer accessory cusps than the Mediterranean population. The proposed tooth morphology framework can be used to complement DNA analyses in identifying shark species or populations, which is important for fisheries management and shark fossil identification.

Evolutionary developmental genetics of teeth and odontodes in jawed vertebrates: a perspective from the study of elasmobranchs

Fidji Berio et al.

Summary: This study explores the development and genetic expression of teeth and odontodes in vertebrates, highlighting the importance of proper comparative frameworks and the contributions and biases in interspecific comparisons. The evolutionary processes explaining intra and interspecific similarities and divergences in genetic cascades involved in tooth and odontode development in jawed vertebrates are also discussed.

Mammalian molar complexity follows simple, predictable patterns

Keegan R. Selig et al.

Summary: The study found that molar complexity conforms to the inhibitory cascade model (ICM) and that varying levels of inhibiting/activating activity produce different patterns of molar complexity depending on diet. This model offers a developmental framework for explaining variation in molar complexity and provides a means for testing developmental hypotheses in the broader context of mammalian evolution.
