Unconventional energetics of small vacancy clusters in BCC high-entropy alloy Nb0.75ZrTiV0.5

Tan Shi et al.

Summary: The stability of small vacancy clusters in a high-entropy alloy Nb0.75ZrTiV0.5 with body-centered cubic structure was investigated using first-principles calculations and molecular dynamics simulations. The tightly bound configurations were found to have lower structural stability and were not energetically preferred in the studied alloy. The instability of these configurations led to vacancy-atom exchanges that favored less compact configurations. The formation energy of small vacancy clusters was much smaller than that of its constituent elements due to the large structural adjustment induced by severe local lattice distortion. The difference in local lattice distortion and elemental arrangement in the vacancy neighborhood resulted in significant site-to-site variation in vacancy cluster energy and configuration. The unconventional energetics of small vacancy clusters are expected to have a profound impact on their behavior and the defect microstructure evolution during irradiation.

Yanwen Zhang et al.

Summary: This review discusses the development of advanced structural alloys with improved performance by tuning chemical disorder. The synthesis of multicomponent concentrated solid-solution alloys has expanded the compositional space for new alloy discovery. The tunable electronic structure and atomic-level diversity in these alloys allow for control of energy dissipation and energy transport mechanisms, leading to enhanced alloy properties.

Distinct point defect behaviours in body-centered cubic medium-entropy alloy NbZrTi induced by severe lattice distortion

Tan Shi et al.

Summary: The point defect properties of body-centered cubic medium-entropy alloy NbZrTi were studied using first-principles calculations. The alloy exhibits a distorted lattice structure, resulting in unstable vacancy and interstitial structures. The vacancy and interstitial formation energies are lower than that of Nb, and the vacancy migration energy shows a wide distribution. The diffusion of interstitials is slower in NbZrTi compared to pure Nb, while Ti atoms diffuse faster. The results provide insights for the development of inter-atomic potentials for radiation damage studies.

Short-range order localizing diffusion in multi-principal element alloys

Bin Xing et al.

Summary: The impact of chemical short-range order (SRO) on diffusion in multi-principal elements alloys is computationally studied and theoretically analyzed. It is found that the presence of SRO considerably reduces and localizes vacancy-mediated diffusion, which is induced by an increase of migration barrier and enhanced diffusion correlation. The results imply that controlling the ordering in chemistry can potentially manipulate diffusional behaviors in multi-principal elements alloys.

Chemical ordering effect on the radiation resistance of a CoNiCrFeMn high-entropy alloy

Yangen Li et al.

Summary: The chemical ordering of CoNiCrFeMn has a significant impact on radiation resistance. At lower temperature, the chemical ordering-driven phase decomposition leads to the formation of Cr-rich regions, accelerating the evolution of defects. At higher temperature, the chemical short-range order effectively delays the growth of defects, reducing dislocation density and defect diffusion, suggesting better radiation resistance.

Chemical short-range order in body-centered-cubic TiZrHfNb high-entropy alloys

Bozhao Zhang et al.

Summary: Through detailed density functional theory-based Monte Carlo simulations, we have explored the characteristic chemical short-range order (CSRO) in the TiZrHfNb alloy, a representative body-centered-cubic refractory high-entropy alloy (HEA). The preference for Ti-Zr and Nb-Hf nearest-neighbor environments was observed, leading to the formation of (Ti,Zr,O)-enriched ordered complexes. Additionally, small but noticeable changes in key material parameters, such as elastic moduli, misfit volume, and predicted yield strength, were reported due to the presence of CSROs, providing valuable structure-property information for enhancing the design of highly concentrated HEA solid solutions.

Local chemical fluctuation mediated ductility in body-centered-cubic high-entropy alloys

Yeqiang Bu et al.

Summary: This study captured the dynamic interaction between LCFs and dislocations in ductile BCC HfNbTiZr HEAs, demonstrating how LCFs influence strength and ductility by promoting dislocation interaction. The observed double cross-slips caused by LCFs homogenously distribute dislocations onto various atomic planes, contributing to ductilization in HfNbTiZr. These findings offer insights into the deformation mechanisms of HEAs and suggest new strategies for designing ductile BCC HEAs.

Simulations of primary damage in a High Entropy Alloy: Probing enhanced radiation resistance

O. R. Deluigi et al.

Summary: Research has shown that high entropy alloys exhibit a lower average number of defects in the early stages of radiation damage response compared to pure Ni, but there is no significant difference in defect evolution during the cascade, indicating that the radiation resistance of high entropy alloys may not be due to a reduction in primary damage caused by chemical disorder, but probably caused by longer-time defect evolution.
