Genome-wide gene expression noise in Escherichia coli is condition-dependent and determined by propagation of noise through the regulatory network

Arantxa Urchueguia et al.

Summary: This study revealed significant variation in transcriptional noise levels of gene promoters in Escherichia coli across different growth conditions, with noise systematically decreasing with growth rate. While constitutive promoters showed consistently low noise in all conditions, regulated promoters exhibited higher average noise levels and greater variability in noise across conditions. A simple model of noise propagation from regulators to their targets could explain a significant portion of the variation in relative noise levels.
