Barriers to Treatment Adherence Among Older Adults With Type 2 Diabetes: A Qualitative Study

Summary: The qualitative study aimed to identify barriers to treatment adherence among older adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 25 older adults with T2D. Three themes emerged from the analysis: Patient-Specific Barriers, Health Care Provider- and Health Care System-Specific Barriers, and Social-Specific Barriers. The results can be used to develop targeted interventions to improve treatment adherence in this population.

Self-management After Bariatric Surgery: a Comparison Between Support Group Participants and Patients Receiving Individual Dietary Follow-Up

Summary: This study aimed to compare self-management after bariatric surgery between support group participants and patients receiving only individual follow-up. The findings showed that the level of self-management was better in the support group. In addition, emotional eating was found to be the only variable related to self-management.

Diabetes Stigma and Clinical Outcomes in Adolescents and Young Adults: The SEARCH for Diabetes in Youth Study

Summary: This study examined the association between diabetes stigma and HbA1c, treatment plan, and acute and chronic complications in adolescents and young adults with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. The results showed that diabetes stigma was associated with clinical factors and had an impact on acute and chronic complications in these patients. Therefore, addressing diabetes stigma is important in providing comprehensive diabetes care.

Summary: This study found a lack of consistency in strategies to identify lonely and socially isolated older adults in primary care, potentially leading to conflicts between intervention content and participant needs. Additionally, there was a predominance of schemes linking primary care with non-healthcare sectors, but durable interventions were scarce despite the need reported by professionals and participants for long-lasting interventions to create meaningful social networks. Sustainability should be a core outcome when implementing loneliness and social isolation interventions in primary care.
