Increasing fengycin production by strengthening the fatty acid synthesis pathway and optimizing fermentation conditions

Wei Tan et al.

Summary: Bacillus subtilis 168 was engineered as a cell factory for fengycin production by activating its dormant native fengycin synthetase. Genetically modified strain 168DS showed an initial fengycin production of 10.40 mg/L in flask culture, which increased to 130.10 mg/L through a combination of gene overexpression and optimization of fermentation conditions. This strategy provides a path to increase industrial production and reduce the price of fengycin.

Lipopeptide production by Serratia marcescens SmSA using a Taguchi design and its application in enhanced heavy oil recovery

T. Roldan-Carrillo et al.

Summary: Optimization of biosurfactant production by Serratia marcescens SmSA for enhanced heavy oil recovery on carbonate rocks was conducted through evaluating factors such as temperature, agitation, and carbon/nitrogen ratio. The biosurfactant produced exhibited stable performance under extreme conditions and was effective in reducing interfacial tension and modifying wettability of rocks, resulting in an additional 8% oil recovery in reservoir conditions. This study highlights the potential application of S. marcescens SmSA biosurfactant in enhanced oil recovery.
