Multiscale investigation of self-consolidating earthen materials using a novel concrete-equivalent mortar approach

Mojtaba Kohandelnia et al.

Summary: In this study, the workability, drying shrinkage, and compressive strength of self-consolidating earth concrete (SCEC) mixtures were evaluated using a new concrete-equivalent mortar (CEM) approach. This approach optimized the excess paste (EP) thickness based on the variation of packing density of the granular skeleton. Good correlations between the investigated CEMs and their corresponding concrete mixtures were established. The main influencing parameters on workability, drying shrinkage, and compressive strength of SCEC include the specific surface area and Atterberg limits of the ternary binder system, water-to-powder ratio (W/P), paste volume, and EP thickness.

Yield stress of fine cement-based mortars: Challenges and potentials with rotational and compressional testing methods

Mohammad Amin Moeini et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the static yield stress of cement-based mortar mixtures using rotational and compressional testing set-ups. The results show the impact of water-to-cement ratio and high-range water reducer dosage on the yield stress, as well as the differences in results obtained with different testing methods.

A new approach for proportioning self-consolidating earth paste (SCEP) using the Taguchi method

Mojtaba Kohandelnia et al.

Summary: Rammed earth (RE) construction is a sustainable method with economic and environmental advantages. The use of self-consolidating earth concrete (SCEC) can speed up the construction process, but developing SCEC is challenging due to clay. This study evaluates the effect of different parameters and establishes models to predict the workability of self-consolidating earth paste (SCEP).

Diphasic investigation of the visco-elastoplastic characteristics of highly flowable fine mortars

Masoud Hosseinpoor et al.

Summary: The rheological properties of the lubrication layer between concrete and pumping pipe wall were investigated through experiments and simulations, showing that increasing fine sand content enhances the visco-elastoplastic properties of the mixtures. Empirical relationships between rheological properties and mini-slump flow values were established, and new models for evaluating lubrication layer materials were proposed.
