Translation and rotation of particles in different flow pattern areas of a silo

Ran Li et al.

Summary: This paper reports the results of studying the translational and rotational velocity profiles of spherical particles in a conical silo with mixed flow. The discrete element method (DEM) based on the Hertz-Mindlin (no slip) with RVD rolling friction contact model is used for simulations. Opposite correlations between translational and rotational velocities are found in different flow areas of the silo. Specifically, rotational abrasion is dominant in the funnel flow area. Additionally, increasing the mass flow rate of the silo can effectively reduce rotation-induced abrasion. This highlights the importance of understanding the dynamic characteristics of particles for optimizing silos and reducing granular material abrasion.

Effect of various inserts on flow behavior of Fe2O3 beads in a three-dimensional silo subjected to cyclic discharge- Part II: Exploration of internal dynamic properties

C. C. Liao et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the internal dynamical properties of Fe2O3 beads in 3D silos subjected to cyclic discharge by using discrete element modeling. The effect of inserts on the internal dynamic properties was explored. The results show that the installation of inserts affects wall tractions, solid volume fraction, and coordination number, depending on insert geometry and placement position. The study also reveals that different types of inserts lead to variations in wall tractions, solid volume fraction, and coordination number. The effect of inserts on friction mobilization is limited.

Effect of various inserts on flow behavior of Fe2O3 beads in a three-dimensional silo subjected to cyclic discharge- Part I: Exploration of transport properties

Y. C. Chung et al.

Summary: This study investigates the flow performance of Fe2O3 beads in a chemical looping reactor by introducing different inserts. The results show that the conical insert, disk insert, and BINSERT can improve the uniformity of Fe2O3 beads flow and enhance the evenness of granular temperatures and residence times.

DEM study of particle segregation in a rotating drum with internal diameter variations

A. N. Huang et al.

Summary: DEM simulations were used to study size segregation of binary mixture in a rotating drum with inner diameter variations. The results showed that larger particle enrichment occurs in the smaller inner diameter regions. The effect of inner diameter contracting ratio (CR) on particle dynamics was further investigated, with CR of 0.9 leading to smaller particles moving towards dilated larger inner diameter regions.

Modelling of full-scale silo experiments with flow correcting inserts using material point method (MPM) based on hypoplasticity

J. Krzyzanowski et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the numerical results of confined granular flow in a full-scale metal silo with different symmetrically placed inserts, emphasizing on flow patterns and pressures on both silo walls and inserts. The study shows a satisfactory agreement between numerical and experimental outcomes. Various factors such as initial void ratio of sand, wall friction angle, insert position, and grid cell size were also studied in MPM calculations.
