Mutant combinations of lycopene epsilon-cyclase and beta-carotene hydroxylase 2 homoeologs increased beta-carotene accumulation in endosperm of tetraploid wheat (Triticum turgidum L.) grains

Shu Yu et al.

Summary: By mutating LCYe and HYD2 homoeologs, the study demonstrated success in increasing beta-carotene content in the endosperm of tetraploid wheat without compromising plant growth and development in other aspects. This provides insights into potential gene editing strategies for provitamin A biofortification in hexaploid wheat.

Carotenoids, tocopherols and phylloquinone content of 26 green leafy vegetables commonly consumed in Southeast Asia

Hui Wen Lee et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the micronutrient composition of 26 commonly consumed green leafy vegetables in Southeast Asia using HPLC-APCI-MS/MS technology. The results revealed that underutilized vegetables such as sweet leaf bush contain high levels of carotenoids, tocopherols, and phylloquinone. These findings are important for improving the nutritional status of the population in the region.

Transcriptomics analysis provides insights into metabolisms of sugars and carotenoids of nectarine fruit subjected to different temperature storage

Yan Wang et al.

Summary: This study explored the effect of different storage temperatures on metabolic pathways in nectarine fruit using transcriptomics and bioinformatic analyses. The results showed that temperature had a significant impact on sugar and carotenoid synthesis, with low temperature storage inhibiting the synthesis of sucrose and carotenoids. Furthermore, potential transcription factors involved in carotenoid metabolism were identified.

Auxin induced carotenoid accumulation in GA and PDJ-treated citrus fruit after harvest

Gang Ma et al.

Summary: The combined spraying of gibberellin and prohydrojasmon is effective in preventing peel puffing disorder in citrus fruit, although it inhibits carotenoid biosynthesis leading to poor fruit coloration. Postharvest treatments of auxins, indole-3-acetic acid and 1-naphthaleneacetic acid, can enhance carotenoid accumulation in fruit, improve coloration, and stimulate carotenoid biosynthesis by up-regulating biosynthetic genes and down-regulating catabolic gene. Ethylene production is also induced by the treatments, further promoting carotenoid biosynthesis.

Lycopene Accumulation in Cara Cara Red-flesh Navel Orange Is Correlated with Weak Abscisic Acid Catabolism

Cuihua Liu et al.

Summary: The research found that compared to wild types, red-flesh citrus mutants have increased levels of lycopene, carotenoids, and limonoid aglycones, but decreased levels of abscisic acid catabolites, monoterpenoid volatiles, and sesquiterpenoid volatiles. The red flesh is related to weak ABA catabolism, especially ABAGE, and decreased transcript levels of genes encoding enzymes for ABAGE biosynthesis.
