Smart labels are an effective way to provide timely feedback to consumers on the quality of fruit and vegetables, and they have great potential for development and market application. This paper reviews the types and research progress of smart labels and summarizes their classification based on the factors affecting fruit and vegetable quality. Smart labels suitable for fruit and vegetable quality inspection, including ethylene-sensitive, color-sensitive, and temperature-sensitive types, are collated based on the characteristics of fruit and vegetables. Finally, the future development and new applications of smart labels are foreseen.
