Modeling and control of ionic polymer metal composite actuators: A review

Liang Yang et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the main factors affecting the actuation performance of IPMC and describes three modeling techniques in detail: black box models, gray box models, and white box models. Then, five control methods of IPMC are analyzed and discussed, including proportional integral derivative control, adaptive control, sliding mode control, inverse control, and other control methods. Finally, the model and control of IPMC are summarized, and the future development direction is prospected.

Influence of loading voltage, domain ratio, and additional load on the actuation of dielectric elastomer

Hong Wang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the actuation performance of cone dielectric elastomer actuator and found that the output displacement and force of DEA increase with the increase of loading voltage and additional load. The design with different domain ratios is a key factor that influences the performance of DEA actuator.

Electroless copper deposition and interface characteristics of ionic electroactive polymer

Liang Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, a cheap copper electrode IPMC was prepared by chemical deposition and its surface and cross section morphology, roughness, and porosity were analyzed. The interface profile was simulated using the WM function and the adhesion force of the interface was calculated, showing the positive impact of the copper layer on the performance of IPMC.

Permittivity, loss factor and Cole-Cole model of acrylic materials for dielectric elastomers

Hong Wang et al.

Summary: The dielectric properties of VHB4905 and VHB4910 were systematically measured and analyzed, revealing their sensitivity to frequency dependence and the effects of microstructure. High frequency orientation movement of polar groups was found to decrease the dielectric constant, while fitting correlation coefficients were high, providing insight for the design and control of dielectric elastomer actuators.

Effect of different prestretching index and preloading on actuation behaviors of dielectric elastomer actuator

Hong Wang et al.

Summary: This study determined the prestretching indexes of dielectric elastomers through measuring tensile properties and discussed the actuation displacement and output force of the conical dielectric elastomer actuator with different prestretching index and preloading conditions. The study proposed three indexes to calculate the strain energy density of the actuator and found that a large prestretching ratio could cause instability in the dielectric elastomers. The Gent model was identified as better reflecting the nonlinear deformation behavior of the actuator.
