Essential Work of Fracture and Evaluation of the Interfacial Adhesion of Plasticized PLA/PBSA Blends with the Addition of Wheat Bran By-Product

Laura Aliotta et al.

Summary: This study investigated the biocomposites based on plasticized poly(lactic acid) (PLA)-poly(butylene succinate-co-adipate) (PBSA) matrix containing wheat bran fiber, a low value by-product of the food industry. The effect of bran addition on mechanical properties was examined, focusing on the fiber-matrix adhesion. Various analytical models based on static and dynamic tests were used to estimate the interfacial shear strength of the biocomposites. The essential work of fracture approach was also employed to evaluate the effect of bran addition on composite fracture toughness.

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/Poly(butylene succinate-co-adipate) (PBSA) Compatibilized Binary Biobased Blends: Melt Fluidity, Morphological, Thermo-Mechanical and Micromechanical Analysis

Laura Aliotta et al.

Summary: The study investigated PLA/PBSA biobased binary blends with different compositions of PBSA, produced by twin screw-extrusion. It was found that adding an epoxy oligomer (EO) improved the compatibility of the rubber phase with the PLA matrix. Different micromechanical responses were observed for blends with varying compositions, with EO causing a significant change in the response of certain blends.

Analysis of the Damage Mechanism around the Crack Tip for Two Rubber-Toughened PLA-Based Blends

Vito Gigante et al.

Summary: The study investigated the toughening mechanisms of poly(lactic acid; PLA) blended with two different elastomers, PBAT and POE-g-GMA, showing an improvement in PLA performance. PBAT appeared as spheres while POE-g-GMA had a dual sphere/fibre morphology. Damage was mainly generated by shear yielding deformation in the subcritical crack tip damaged zone.

Volume Change during Creep and Micromechanical Deformation Processes in PLA-PBSA Binary Blends

Laura Aliotta et al.

Summary: Creep measurements were conducted on PLA and its blends with PBSA to investigate their micromechanical behavior. The introduction of PBSA particles led to an increment in the apparent stress intensity factor, with debonding identified as the main micromechanical mechanism responsible for volume variation. Debonding was found to start earlier in the 85-15 blend, indicating a lower stress level needed for this mechanism to occur.
