Experimental investigation on the mechanical behavior and damage of 3D printed composites under three-point bending

Lian-hua Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanical behaviors of 3D printed continuous fiber reinforced composites under three-point bending test using AE, DIC and Micro-CT. The results show that AE parameters are closely associated with the damage process of different specimens, and the strain fields characterized by DIC are reasonably matched with the AE signal responses. Micro-CT characterization reveals the critical damage and delamination mechanisms of the 3D printed composites.

Tensile damage evolution of 2D SiC(f)/BN(i)/(SiC-B4C)(m) composites based on acoustic emission pattern recognition

Yongzhen Zhang et al.

Summary: The tensile test of 2D SiC(f)/BN(i)/(SiC-B4C)((m)) was conducted with acoustic emission (AE) online monitoring to study mechanical properties and failure mechanisms. Pattern recognition technique was used to determine the relationship between AE signals and damage mechanisms, leading to the proposal of an improved sentry function. The loading process was found to consist of four stages with different damage mechanisms dominating each stage.

Compression after high-velocity impact behavior of pseudo-elastic shape memory alloy embedded glass/epoxy composite laminates

Luv Verma et al.

Summary: The CAI behavior of PE-SMA embedded glass/epoxy composite laminates manufactured via VARI technique was investigated experimentally after high-velocity impact. Results showed that anchored PE-SMA composites had a higher ballistic limit compared to homogeneous glass/epoxy composites, and the damage tolerance of PE-SMA based composites was better at 70 m/s but lower at higher velocities compared to homogeneous ones.

Damage analysis of combined continuous and discontinuous thin-ply carbon/glass hybrid composite using acoustic emission

Amos Ichenihi et al.

Summary: By combining partially discontinuous carbon and angled carbon layers with continuous glass and carbon, it is possible to increase the carbon/glass ratio while maintaining pseudo-ductility and improving mechanical properties. Sandwiched DC layers with CC layers show better mechanical properties compared to samples with DC layers sandwiched by CC layers.
