Investigation of bending behavior for slotted sandwich panels made with ABS and PLA along with aluminum cores

S. S. Dou et al.

Summary: A new type of sandwich panels with increased bending resistance by creating thin layers separated from each other has been studied. Experimental and numerical analyses were performed on 14 samples, consisting of PLA and ABS materials, through three-point bending tests and LS-DYNA simulations. It was observed that creating slits perpendicular to the loading direction in the beams can enhance flexibility and reduce maximum force. Furthermore, the addition of aluminum cores and adhesive further improved energy absorption.

Sandwich structures based on fused filament fabrication 3D-printed polylactic acid honeycomb and poly(vinylidene fluoride) nanocomposites for microwave absorbing applications

Debora P. Schmitz et al.

Summary: Polylactic acid (PLA)-based honeycomb samples with different cell sizes and thickness were prepared using 3D printing technology. These honeycomb structures were used as core components in sandwiched multilayer structures with poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and/or PVDF/carbon nanotube (CNT) nanocomposites. The properties of these structures in terms of microwave absorption were investigated, and it was found that the honeycomb design and the presence of an impedance matching layer influenced the results.

Mechanical performance of sandwich composites with additively manufactured triply periodic minimal surface cellular structured core

O. Fashanu et al.

Summary: Sandwich composite structures with TPMS cellular cores were investigated for their feasibility, and mechanical tests were performed to compare the performance of different structures. The results showed changes in compressive strength, shear yield stress, and impact resistance when non-traditional cores were used in comparison to traditional honeycomb cores.

Mechanical properties and energy absorption capabilities of aluminium foam sandwich structure subjected to low-velocity impact

Ying Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamic behaviors, deformation and damage mechanisms, and energy absorption of aluminium foam sandwich structures subjected to low-velocity impact. Experimental and numerical analyses were conducted to evaluate the influences of face sheet thickness, core height, and density on the performance of energy absorption. The results show that the combination of impact energy and energy absorption indicators play a crucial role in the optimal design of sandwich structures.

Effect of geometrical parameters on the flexural properties of sandwich structures with 3D-printed honeycomb core and E-glass/epoxy Face-sheets

Sabah Pirouzfar et al.

Summary: This study investigates the flexural properties of 3D-printed honeycomb structures and sandwich panels with face-sheets made of E-glass/epoxy laminates. The impact of different geometrical parameters on the flexural properties is examined, with the horizontal honeycomb core structure showing the highest normalized energy absorption. The use of additive manufacturing technology significantly improves the flexural properties of the honeycomb core sandwich structures compared to traditional materials like Nomex and Aluminum.
