Fabrication of polydimethylsiloxane mixed matrix membranes for recovery of ethylene glycol butyl ether from water by pervaporation

Ting Wang et al.

Summary: In order to reduce emissions in industries such as automotive coatings, the separation and recovery of ethylene glycol butyl ether (EB) from wastewater is crucial. This study focused on using nanomaterials as additives to construct mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for pervaporation separation of EB. The addition of nanomaterials improved the affinity and diffusion process of EB in MMMs, enhancing the separation performance. Surface modification of nanomaterials with polyethylene glycol (PEG) further enhanced the affinity and swelling performance, resulting in improved membrane flux and selectivity. The MMMs with PEG2000-grafted nanomaterials showed the best performance and stability for separating EB compared to commercial membranes.

Poly(vinyl alcohol)/carbon nanotube (CNT) membranes for pervaporation dehydration: The effect of functionalization agents for CNT on pervaporation performance

Cheng Tseng et al.

Summary: Polymeric membrane-based pervaporation separation for desalination and dehydration has been studied using surface-functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) membranes. The hydrophilicity of the functionalization agents is critical for the construction of water-conduction pathways. Small amounts of functionalized CNTs significantly enhance the permeation fluxes of the membranes. PVA-CNT shows the highest performance for desalination, while ozonized lignin-functionalized CNTs are most effective for dehydration.

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) Membrane for Separation of Soluble Toluene by Pervaporation Process

Salam H. Rasheed et al.

Summary: In this study, a commercial polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membrane was used for the separation of soluble toluene compounds (C7H8) from an aqueous solution using the pervaporation (PV) process. The performance of the PDMS PV membrane was evaluated by analyzing the permeation flux and separation factor under different operating conditions. A quadratic equation model with parameters interactions was developed using nonlinear regression analysis to predict the permeation flux and separation factor. The feed concentration was found to have the most significant impact on the improvement of the PDMS membrane's permeation flux and separation factor.

Alternative acetone-water separation process through the application of aqueous two-phase systems

Jose Omar Garcia Gomez et al.

Summary: The study proposes an alternative process for the dehydration of acetone by liquid-liquid extraction using an aqueous two-phase system (ATPS). Experimental results on the acetone-water-potassium carbonate ternary system show a good correlation with the ELECNRTL thermodynamic model. The Hunter-Nash method was applied to achieve a concentration greater than 95 wt% of acetone from a 10 wt% mixture at room temperature. Simulation with Aspen Plus's decanter block yielded results very close to the experimental results, indicating potential wide application of ATPSs for dehydration of bioproducts and separation of azeotropic mixtures.

Miroslav Kludsky et al.

Summary: Nafion, a solid perfluorinated polymeric sulfonic acid, can be extensively modified by reacting with bases, leading to changes in spectral characteristics, thermal stability, and selectivity during pervaporation. Strong bases result in significant alterations in Nafion's properties, while modifications with amino acid derivatives show minor effects. The permeability and selectivity of Nafion in pervaporating methanol mixtures are greatly influenced by modification with amines bearing hydroxyl and sulfo groups, with taurine modification showing enhanced selectivity compared to pure Nafion.
