Characterisation of Hemp Fibres Reinforced Composites Using Thermoplastic Polymers as Matrices

Lucia Stelea et al.

Summary: Composite materials with hemp fibers as reinforcing agents and different polymeric matrices were prepared by needle punching and heat pressing. The properties of the composites were analyzed with respect to the hemp/matrix ratio and the nature of the matrix. The results showed that the mechanical properties of the composites were affected by both the hemp/matrix ratio and the nature of the matrix, and the thermal stability of the composites decreased as the amount of hemp increased.

Green Composites from Partially Bio-Based Poly(butylene succinate-co-adipate)-PBSA and Short Hemp Fibers with Itaconic Acid-Derived Compatibilizers and Plasticizers

Celia Dolza et al.

Summary: In this study, green composites were developed using a bio-based polymeric matrix and short hemp fibers as reinforcement. The interfacial adhesion between the matrix and fiber was improved using a reactive extrusion process. Different additives derived from bio-based itaconic acid were added to the composite to enhance its properties. The resulting composites were evaluated for mechanical, thermal, chemical, dynamic-mechanical, morphological, wettability, and color properties. The incorporation of hemp fibers increased the stiffness of the base polymer and the addition of certain additives improved the ductility of the composites. From a thermomechanical perspective, the rigidity of the materials was increased. Water absorption and contact angle properties were greatly affected by the introduction of lignocellulosic fibers, but the use of additives helped to mitigate this effect.
