Experimental and numerical assessment of the impact behaviour of a composite sandwich panel with a polymeric honeycomb core

Valerio Acanfora et al.

Summary: This paper presents a numerical/experimental study on a new effective shock absorber concept achieved through Additive Manufacturing technology. The study compares different shock absorber configurations and demonstrates that sandwich structures made with polypropylene and carbon fiber reinforced polymers exhibit better overall crashworthiness performance. The numerical results are prelimary validated through experimental tests.

Flatwise compression behavior of composite Nomex® honeycomb sandwich structure

Wei Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanical properties of Nomex (R) paper and composite Nomex (R) honeycomb sandwich structures (CNHSS) through tensile and flatwise tests, using numerical models to predict CNHSS performance and experimental results for validation. The findings suggest that CNHSS has two flatwise compressive elastic moduli, with manufacturing geometric defects having minimal impact on the ultimate compressive strength. The modified equations accurately predict the flatwise compressive buckling strength and modulus of CNHSS.

State of the art review on mechanical properties of sandwich composite structures

Vivek Patekar et al.

Summary: Sandwich composite structures are widely used in various industries due to their high specific strength and energy absorption capabilities. The mechanical properties of these structures depend on the material properties of the face sheet, core, and their interface. Researchers have explored the use of nano-fillers to improve the mechanical properties of composite structures. This review discusses the influence of various material and geometrical parameters, such as fiber reinforcement and nano-fillers, on the mechanical properties of sandwich composite structures. Additionally, the deformation behavior and mechanical properties of the honeycomb core, as well as the effect of temperature variation, are discussed. Future advancements in this field are also explored.

Design and characterization of a multilayered hybrid cored-sandwich panel stiffened by thin-walled lattice structure

Moslem Najafi et al.

Summary: The study aimed to enhance the mechanical properties and environmental durability of traditional PU foam cored-sandwich panels through introducing innovative structural modifications, resulting in significant improvements. The proposed multilayered hybrid core consisting of agglomerate cork and PU foam, orthogonally stiffened by a thin-walled lattice structure, showed enhanced properties when tested for environmental durability and mechanical performance.

Fabrication and mechanical behaviors of quartz fiber composite honeycomb with extremely low permittivity

Zhengxian Liu et al.

Summary: The study focused on the mechanical properties and electromagnetic parameters of quartz fiber composite honeycombs (QFCH) with different equivalent densities. The equivalent permittivity of QFCH was determined based on transmission efficiency, and the strengths under various loading conditions were predicted and measured. A failure mechanism map was established to predict the main failure modes, and numerical simulation was used to verify the accuracy. The QFCH showed potential as a 3-D metamaterial mechanical framework for new generation radomes.

A feasibility study on additive manufactured hybrid metal/composite shock absorbers

V. Acanfora et al.

Summary: The research focuses on the feasibility and effectiveness of novel thin additive manufactured hybrid metal/composite lattice structures as lightweight shock absorbing devices. These hybrid structures combine an additive manufactured metal lattice core for energy absorption with a composite skin/cohesive coating for weight reduction, increased stiffness, and strength of the shock absorber. Extensive numerical analysis demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed lightweight hybrid configuration compared to traditional shock absorbing panels in terms of mass reduction, mechanical, and energy absorption performances.

A brief review of modified conductive carbon/glass fibre reinforced composites for structural applications: Lightning strike protection, electromagnetic shielding, and strain sensing

S. Das et al.

Summary: The review article discussed how modifying and improving the electrical conductivity of FRP laminates can be used for non-structural applications such as lightning strike protection, EMI shielding, and strain/damage sensing. Different techniques like metal tufting/stitching, conductive resin, coating, and interleaves were discussed for these applications. Metal-tufting and PANI-based conductive resin were found to be effective in resisting lightning damage and performing well in strain sensing and EMI shielding.
