Antibacterial and electrochemical evaluation of electrospun polyethersulfone/silver composites as highly persistent nanomaterials

Maria Monica Hernandez-Orozco et al.

Summary: In this study, electrospun composites of polyethersulfone (PES) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were fabricated to address bacterial resistance issues. The composites exhibited highly-persistent antibacterial behavior after 10 bacterial exposures. The PES/AgNPs fibers showed reduced diameter, increased hydrophilic behavior, and improved interaction with bacteria, and demonstrated antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli (E. coli) with 75% inhibition after 3 hours of exposure in the composite with 0.5 wt% Ag and 75% inhibition after 1.5 hours in composites with 5 wt% Ag. The antibacterial behavior remained constant after 10 consecutive exposures, making the PES/AgNPs composites suitable as functional antimicrobial nanomaterials.

Electrospun short nanofibers to improve damage resistance of carbon fiber composites

Usaid Ahmed Shakil et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of electrospun nylon 6 short nanofiber addition on the damage resistance of carbon fiber/epoxy composites. The results showed improvement in peak force, displacement, and elastic toughness at the optimum nanofiber concentration, as well as a reduction in delaminated area. The addition of nanofibers also suppressed compressive fiber failure and enhanced interlaminar bonding, leading to superior performance.

Boron-containing nonwoven polymeric nanofiber mats as neutron shields in compact nuclear fusion reactors

Mucahid Ozcan et al.

Summary: Composite materials containing thermally and chemically stable boron compounds show promise for high neutron absorption applications. Electrospun polymer nanofibers can moderate and thermalize neutrons, while nonwoven nanofibers reduce neutron scattering and increase absorption. This study successfully produced boron-doped PVA nanofibers for neutron shielding, demonstrating their potential.

Electrospinning strategy for the preparation of nano-porous fibers as modifier for inducing the network structure and enhancing mechanical properties of SBS-modified asphalt

Zhaorong Zhu et al.

Summary: Electrospinning was used to prepare nano-porous fibers (E-PAN) with enhanced adhesion and interface effects, which were then incorporated into styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) asphalt to prepare PAN modified asphalt. The addition of E-PAN significantly improved the viscoelasticity, anti-rutting and anti-fatigue properties, and thermal stability of the modified asphalt. E-PAN chemically crosslinked with the base asphalt and SBS, forming a uniform and well-developed network structure.

Seyede Elaheh Ghafouri et al.

Summary: This study investigates the release of levetiracetam using poly(lactic acid), poly(epsilon-caprolactone), and their blend electrospun nanofibers as novel systems. Scanning electron microscopy confirms the smooth and beads-free morphology of the samples. With increasing levetiracetam content, the average diameters of the nanofibers also increase. FTIR spectroscopy is used for structural confirmation and observation of functional groups. X-ray diffraction reveals a decrease in crystallinity and different drug release kinetics are evaluated using various models.
