Structure of the Poly(methyl methacrylate) Adsorbed Layer Determined by the Surface Chemistry of the Substrate

Weizhao Ren et al.

Summary: The adsorbed polymer layer on the inorganic solid surface plays a crucial role in improving the physical properties of composite nanomaterials. By altering the structure of the adsorbed layer, the properties can be tuned. In this study, we investigated the adsorbed layers of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) on SiO2-Si substrates by varying the hydroxyl (OH) group content on the substrate surface. The results showed that the thickness of the adsorbed layers decreased with decreasing OH group content, and the flattened layer disappeared when the content was around 31%. The presence of OH groups controlled the formation of the adsorbed layer, providing anchor points through hydrogen bonding with the carbonyl groups in PMMA.

Versatile homeotropic liquid crystal alignment with tunable functionality prepared by one-step method

Yang Zhang et al.

Summary: Alignment layers are essential for liquid crystal-based devices, and a simple one-step method using silanes to form an effective homeotropic alignment layer on a glass substrate has been proposed in the study. This method allows for the automatic alignment of LCs and the introduction of additional functional groups for adjusting interface properties, showing promise for the development of flexible LC devices.

Analysis of Homopolymer Distribution in a Polymer Blend Thin Film by Anomalous Grazing Incidence Small-Angle X-ray Scattering at the Bromine K-Edge

Hiroki Hamamoto et al.

Summary: Anomalous grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (AGISAXS) was used to analyze the dispersion state of brominated homopolymer in PS-PHS/Br-PHS blend thin films. The results showed that Br-PHS segregated to the PS-PHS interface to reduce the interfacial energy.

Analysis of spatial orientation distribution of highly oriented polyimide film using micro ATR-FTIR spectroscopic imaging method

Ryohei Ishige et al.

Summary: In this study, molecular orientation of aromatic polyimides (PIs) and their precursor of poly(amic ester)s (PAE) in biaxially oriented films was analyzed by polarized microscopic attenuated-total-reflection Fourier-transform infrared absorption spectroscopy (micro pATR-FTIR) imaging. The results showed the heterogeneous distribution of aromatic imide plane in the films, with face-on and edge-on orientation domains coexisting. The study also successfully visualized cracks in the PI film and investigated the orientation distribution inside the cracks, validating the quantitative capability of the micro pATR-FTIR imaging method for analyzing highly oriented PI films and demonstrating its ability to investigate micrometer-scale heterogeneity.

Quantitative analysis of stereoscopic molecular orientations in thermally reactive and heterogeneous noncrystalline thin films via variable-temperature infrared pMAIRS and GI-XRD

Ryohei Ishige et al.

Summary: The combination of variable-temperature pMAIRS and GI-XRD provides a powerful tool for in situ structural analysis of noncrystalline thin-film materials undergoing chemical reactions. The study reveals insights into the molecular orientation mechanism in polymer films, showing that imidization proceeds faster in the amorphous region than in the ordered region. Anomalies in refractive index and birefringence were found in the analysis of PI thin films, indicating the generation of isotropic void structures due to elimination reaction of side chains.

Ubiquitous organic molecule-based free-standing nanowires with ultra-high aspect ratios

Koshi Kamiya et al.

Summary: The critical dimension of semiconductor devices is approaching the single-nm regime, with a focus on practical devices of this scale for production. Planar structures of nano-devices remain central in fabrication techniques, limiting further integration into chips. Expanding into 3D space is seen as a promising strategy for the future, with high-energy charged particles used to create free-standing 1D organic nanostructures with high aspect ratios and controlled number density.
