Beta-Caryophyllene Enhances the Anti-Tumor Activity of Cisplatin in Lung Cancer Cell Lines through Regulating Cell Cycle and Apoptosis Signaling Molecules

Emad A. Ahmed et al.

Summary: β-Caryophyllene (BCP) enhances the anti-tumor activity of cisplatin (CDDP) on lung cancer cells by regulating the cell cycle, apoptosis, and EMT signaling molecules. BCP is non-toxic at moderate doses and can prevent lung cancer progression. The combination of BCP and CDDP upregulates the levels of CDKN1A and BCL-xl2, and downregulates the level of BCL-2, enhancing the chemotherapeutic function of CDDP.

Monounsaturated Fatty Acids: Key Regulators of Cell Viability and Intracellular Signaling in Cancer

Julia S. Scott et al.

Summary: Cancer cells have increased macromolecular biosynthesis, with lipids playing a critical role in cell division, energy generation, and cell signaling. Advances in lipidome profiling technology have greatly improved our understanding of cancer metabolism and identified potential therapeutic targets. Fatty acids, as building blocks of lipids, are crucial in cancer development and progression, particularly the desaturation of fatty acids. Recent studies have uncovered the diverse roles of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) in cancer, including their regulation of cell death and lipid-related signaling. This commentary highlights the importance of MUFAs in cancer cells and their potential for therapeutic interventions.

The diversity and breadth of cancer cell fatty acid metabolism

Shilpa R. Nagarajan et al.

Summary: Tumor cellular metabolism has distinguishing features that enhance biomass synthesis and maintain cellular homeostasis through complex interactions between cell-intrinsic and cell-extrinsic factors. Fatty acid metabolism plays a crucial role in tumorigenesis by supporting processes like membrane biosynthesis, energy production, and signaling intermediates generation.
