Phytophthora podocarpi sp. nov. from Diseased Needles and Shoots of Podocarpus in New Zealand

Kiryn Dobbie et al.

Summary: Samples of Podocarpus totara with severe needle browning and loss were found in Gisborne, New Zealand in 2011. Phytophthora species were identified through direct tests and subsequent isolations. The species showed low sequence similarities to Peronospora and clade 3 Phytophthora species. It was given the interim designation Phytophthora taxon ttara.

Phytophthora: an ancient, historic, biologically and structurally cohesive and evolutionarily successful generic concept in need of preservation

Clive Brasier et al.

Summary: The study examines the relationship between Phytophthora and downy mildews (DMs) and concludes that the division of Phytophthora into multiple genera is not appropriate. It also finds that the DMs evolved from Phytophthora through convergent evolution, making Phytophthora a paraphyletic group.

Phylogeny and Pathogenicity of Phytophthora Species Associated with Artichoke Crown and Root Rot and Description of Phytophthora marrasii sp. nov.

Carlo Bregant et al.

Summary: Field surveys conducted in the main growing area for globe artichokes in Sardinia, Italy over a 2-year period revealed the widespread presence of Phytophthora-related diseases. A total of 18 Phytophthora colonies belonging to three species were isolated and characterized, including a new species described as Phytophthora marrasii. Pathogenicity tests confirmed that all three Phytophthora species are able to cause disease on globe artichokes, which represent a new host for these pathogens.

New Phytophthora species in clade 2a from the Asia-Pacific region including a re-examination of P. colocasiae and P. meadii

Quynh N. Dang et al.

Summary: Five new taxa from Phytophthora ITS clade 2a were described, including three confirmed species and two informal taxa. These new species showed unique morphology and molecular data, indicating the presence of many undiscovered Phytophthora species in the Asia-Pacific region.

PHYTO-THREATS: Addressing Threats to UK Forests and Woodlands from Phytophthora; Identifying Risks of Spread in Trade and Methods for Mitigation

Sarah Green et al.

Summary: The 'Phyto-threats' project in the UK investigated the spread of Phytophthora through nursery and trade practices, identifying 63 different species with risk related to management practices and trade pathways. Global analysis revealed traits that explain spread and host range, while workshops showed increasing stakeholder interest in nursery accreditation. Introduction of best practice in nurseries could bring substantial net benefits to society.

Two novel Phytophthora species from the southern tip of Africa

Tanay Bose et al.

Summary: Through surveys carried out as part of the Cape Citizen Science programme and independent research, researchers discovered various Phytophthora species associated with natural vegetation in the Greater Cape Floristic Region of South Africa, including newly described Phytophthora emzansi and Phytophthora afrocarpa. The molecular and morphological data of these Phytophthora species enhance our understanding of the unique microbial diversity present in the native vegetation of southern Africa.

Global historic pandemics caused by the FAM-1 genotype of Phytophthora infestans on six continents

Amanda C. Saville et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the Phytophthora infestans FAM-1 genotype, which caused late blight in the late 19th century, was widespread on all six continents globally, being the main cause of the Irish famine. Compared to the US-1 genotype, FAM-1 was first detected in the majority of former British colonies. Historical sample data suggested that the FAM-1 genotype was diverse and widely spread worldwide.

Phytophthora mediterranea sp. nov., a New Species Closely Related to Phytophthora cinnamomi from Nursery Plants of Myrtus communis in Italy

Carlo Bregant et al.

Summary: Monitoring surveys in four forest nurseries in Italy identified fourteen Phytophthora species associated with collar and root rot in Mediterranean and alpine regions. A new species, Phytophthora mediterranea, was described based on genetic and morphological analysis, showing potential threat to native Mediterranean vegetation. Discovery of Phytophthora cinnamomi in alpine nurseries suggests its expansion into colder environments due to climate change.

Unravelling hybridization in Phytophthora using phylogenomics and genome size estimation

Kris Van Poucke et al.

Summary: The genus Phytophthora contains economically and ecologically important plant pathogens, with hybrid species posing a serious threat to agriculture and natural ecosystems. By combining genotyping-by-sequencing and genome size estimation, researchers were able to identify and characterize previously described hybrid species and discover new ones, ultimately improving species identification and phylogenetic relations in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
