A qualitative study of the perceptions of mental health among the Traveller community in Ireland

Jacopo Villani et al.

Summary: Irish Travellers, a minority ethnic group in Ireland, have high rates of mental health problems and a significantly higher suicide rate compared to the general population. This study explores their perceptions of mental health and the factors affecting it, finding that they primarily view mental health in negative terms and lack awareness of positive mental health concepts. Key factors identified for promoting positive mental health among Travellers include addressing social determinants like employment, education, discrimination, and promoting cultural identity and social-emotional skills.

Louise Condon et al.

Summary: This study explores the experiences of cancer diagnosis, treatment and care among Roma, Gypsies and Travellers, finding that while cancer fatalism is decreasing, they still face barriers in accessing cancer healthcare, especially in terms of communication and interpreter services in primary care. Clear communication and trusting relationships with health professionals are highly valued, particularly in tertiary care.

Deriving household composition using population-scale electronic health record data-A reproducible methodology

Rhodri D. Johnson et al.

Summary: This study developed a reproducible methodology for household composition measures using linked administrative data in the SAIL Databank. By defining households, household size, and composition based on adult-to-child relationships and age differences between residents, the study successfully described household composition for 3.1 million individuals within 1.2 million households in Wales. By improving residential anonymised linkage field methods in the SAIL Databank, this study created longitudinal, household-level composition measures at a population-level, providing important insights into individuals' home environments and their impact on health and wellbeing.
