High Prevalence of Antimicrobial Resistance and Integron Gene Cassettes in Multi-Drug-Resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae Isolates From Captive Giant Pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca)

Xia Yan et al.

Summary: This study investigated multi-drug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae in giant pandas and found that the isolates showed resistance to multiple antibiotics, with various antibiotic resistance genes and mobile genetic elements. The results suggest the need for enhanced surveillance and biosecurity measures to prevent the spread of multi-drug-resistant bacteria and the emergence of mobile genetic elements.

Identification of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (CTX-M)-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae belonging to ST37, ST290, and ST2640 in captive giant pandas

Xiaoyan Su et al.

Summary: This study characterized ESBL-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae strains in captive giant pandas, finding different ESBL-encoding genes and antimicrobial resistance genes in these isolates. The strains were resistant to multiple antibiotics and belonged to different sequence types. Effective surveillance and strict infection control strategies are necessary to prevent outbreaks of ESBL-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae in giant pandas.

Summary: This study performed comparative phylogenomics on a large collection of multidrug-resistant K. pneumoniae recovered from companion animals in France. The results showed the transmission of K. pneumoniae clones between animals and humans, suggesting the circulation of clones at the country level.

Summary: This study investigates the occurrence of Klebsiella pneumoniae in wildlife and its antimicrobial resistance. The results show the presence of resistant strains in wild animals, indicating a link between humans, domestic animals, and wildlife. This highlights the lack of knowledge about this ecological context and underestimation of potential health risks.

Extended-Spectrum β-Lactamase-Producing and mcr-1-Positive Escherichia coli from the Gut Microbiota of Healthy Singaporeans

Yichen Ding et al.

Summary: This study identified multidrug-resistant (MDR) Escherichia coli isolates from the gut microbiota of healthy Singaporeans with a diverse range of antibiotic resistance mechanisms, indicating possible clonal transmission between humans and raw meat. Additionally, a group of resistance plasmids might be responsible for the dissemination of colistin resistance gene mcr-1 in Singapore, Malaysia, and Europe, highlighting the importance of better countermeasures to block the transmission of antibiotic resistance.

Microbiological and Clinical Aspects of Raoultella spp.

Tobias M. Appel et al.

Summary: Species of Raoultella and Klebsiella share many similarities and are practically indistinguishable in clinical microbiology laboratories due to technological limitations. There has been an increase in case reports of human Raoultella infections since the late 2000s, leading some authors to suggest Raoultella spp. as rare and/or emerging pathogens. Further studies are needed to clarify the epidemiology and clinical relevance of human Raoultella infections, as well as the impact of advancements in identification techniques on the reported cases. Raoultella spp. may be more underdiagnosed than considered rare or emerging pathogens.
