Putting South-West England on the (strontium isotope) map: A possible origin for highly radiogenic 87Sr/86Sr values from southern Britain

Gundula Muldner et al.

Summary: This study presents the first dedicated strontium isotope map for SouthWest England, revealing highly radiogenic strontium isotope values in the Cornubian granite area, which are associated with high rubidium concentrations in the soil. These findings may require a reevaluation of previous interpretations of archaeological samples from southern Britain and highlight the ongoing need for biosphere sampling and geochemical mapping in strontium isotope investigations.

Sex estimation of teeth at different developmental stages using dimorphic enamel peptide analysis

Rebecca Gowland et al.

Summary: This study tested a new method of sex estimation using enamel peptides on deciduous and permanent teeth at different stages of mineralization, successfully determining the sex of 28 nonadult individuals. The minimally destructive and inexpensive nature of this procedure has significant implications for bioarchaeological studies of infancy and childhood.

Maxillary sinusitis as a respiratory health indicator: a bioarchaeological investigation into medieval central Italy

Giulia Riccomi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess chronic maxillary sinusitis in an osteoarchaeological sample from a medieval rural site in central Italy, and found a lower prevalence compared to coeval rural sites in Northern Europe. The study revealed new associations between maxillary sinusitis and alveolar lesions in the maxillary posterior dentition.
