Spinal degeneration is associated with lumbar multifidus morphology in secondary care patients with low back or leg pain

Jeffrey R. Cooley et al.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between multifidus muscle morphology and degenerative spinal pathologies. It found associations between lower multifidus muscle cross-sectional area and various degenerative pathologies, indicating a potential dose-response relationship between the number of pathologies and multifidus morphology.

Assessing lumbar paraspinal muscle cross-sectional area and fat composition with T1 versus T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging: Reliability and concurrent validity

J. R. Cooley et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the consistency of measuring lumbar multifidus morphology using T2 and T1-weighted sequences, and evaluate the reliability of measurements. Results showed that the total cross-sectional area measurements from T1-weighted sequences were larger than T2, but both sequences exhibited high intra-rater reliability. Additionally, the outlining of muscle boundaries and percentage fat measurements were consistent between sequences, indicating that either MRI sequence could be used interchangeably for this purpose. Further studies comparing the accuracy of various methods for distinguishing fat from muscle are recommended.

Factors associated with paravertebral muscle cross-sectional area in patients with chronic low back pain

Damla Cankurtaran et al.

Summary: The study did not find a relationship between the cross-sectional areas of paraspinal muscles and pain intensity or disability, but identified correlations between age, physical activity level, sarcopenia risk, and obesity with the CSA of paraspinal muscles.
