UniProt: the universal protein knowledgebase in 2021

Alex Bateman et al.

Summary: The UniProt Knowledgebase aims to provide users with a comprehensive, high-quality set of protein sequences annotated with functional information. Updates over the past two years have increased the number of sequences to approximately 190 million, with new methods to assess proteome completeness and quality. UniProtKB has responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by expertly curating relevant entries and making them rapidly available through a dedicated portal.

Western Corn Rootworm (Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte) in Europe: Current Status and Sustainable Pest Management

Renata Bazok et al.

Summary: Between 2008 and 2020, a review of scientific papers and direct interviews with experts on WCR management in European countries was conducted to summarize the research conducted over the last 12 years and describe the current WCR distribution and population in the EU, as well as the management strategies implemented. The research has led to the development of pest management strategies applicable in EU agricultural systems, with crop rotation-based solutions effectively controlling the pest without the need for insecticide use.

Resistance to Bt Maize by Western Corn Rootworm: Effects of Pest Biology, the Pest-Crop Interaction and the Agricultural Landscape on Resistance

Aaron J. Gassmann

Summary: The commercial cultivation of genetically engineered crops that produce insecticidal toxins has been an important innovation in managing agricultural pest insects since the 1990s. While these transgenic crops have benefits such as reduced feeding injury and yield losses from pests, the evolution of resistance by insect pests, such as the western corn rootworm, can diminish these benefits. Measures such as diversified management and planting refuges of non-Bt maize can help delay the evolution of resistance to current and future transgenic traits.
