Titles and Semantic Violations Affect Eye Movements When Viewing Contemporary Paintings

Joanna Ganczarek et al.

Summary: The role of titles in perception of visual art is highly significant, as they provide contextual cues and guide the viewers' perception. This study found that titles affect the way paintings are viewed, with titled conditions leading to shorter first fixation duration, longer saccade durations, and higher dynamic entropy. Additionally, titles attracted more fixations, especially when presented with paintings that had semantic violations. The study also observed that semantic violations attracted attention early on, while titles received attention later.
