Secretive and close? How sharing secrets may impact perceptions of distance

A Process Model of Having and Keeping Secrets

Michael L. Slepian

Summary: Secrecy is a common human experience with significant consequences, but the literature lacks an integrative theoretical model. A new model of secrecy is introduced, defining secrecy as an intention to keep information unknown by others and emphasizing two broad contexts in which secret-relevant thoughts are cued: social interactions requiring concealment, and situations where concealment is not necessary. The model suggests that engagement with secret thoughts in different situations can lead to distinct processes and outcomes.

Identifying the Dimensions of Secrets to Reduce Their Harms

Summary: The content of secrets is related to their harms, with factors such as morality, relational aspects, and profession/goal-orientation influencing feelings of shame, social connectedness, and insight into the secret, which in turn predict the extent of harm to well-being. Reminding individuals that secrets do not necessarily have to be harmful can enhance feelings of well-being and coping efficacy. Furthermore, perceived coping efficacy with secrets can predict daily relationship quality indicators.

The closeness-inducing task produced more closeness and positive outcomes relative to the small-talk task. Additionally, the mode of communication (video-chat vs. face-to-face) did not impact the effectiveness of the closeness task.
