A computationally assisted technique to measure material-specific surface coefficients in capacitively coupled plasmas based on characteristics of the ion flux-energy distribution function

C. Schulze et al.

Summary: A new method is presented for determining surface coefficients through energy-selective mass spectrometry measurements and numerical simulations, analyzing the bimodal peak structure in the ion flux-energy distribution function in a symmetric capacitively coupled plasma. The method allows for simultaneous determination of effective ion-induced secondary electron yield and effective elastic electron reflection coefficient under realistic plasma conditions, with good agreement to literature data.

In situ measurement of electron emission yield at silicon dioxide surfaces exposed to argon plasmas

Summary: Plasma simulations require accurate yield data for predicting electron flux, which can be achieved through in situ measurements in a radio-frequency biased, inductively coupled plasma system in argon gas. The measurements of rf current, voltage, ion current density, and electron temperature help distinguish emitted electron flux from other current mechanisms. Effective yield, determined as the ratio of total emitted electron flux to incident ion flux, reveals the dominance of Ar+ kinetic emission in the experiments.
